Please read before applying
This is a fully office-based role in Central London (W2). You'll need to reliably commute to W2 daily. We are unable to offer visa sponsorship. You must already have the unrestricted, ongoing right to work in the UK. You'll also need 1–2 years' hands-on bookkeeping experience and genuinely strong Excel skills (see below). If these don't match you, please don't apply.
About us
Tax Effective Ltd is a small, modern, digital-first accountancy practice in Bayswater. We're looking for a bright, self-sufficient Finance & Bookkeeping Assistant to take ownership of client bookkeeping and support our daily management reporting, working alongside (and reporting to) our Senior Client Manager.
This is a hands-on role for someone with at least 1 to 2 years' experience, who's already confident running the bookkeeping cycle and preparing VAT returns without being closely managed, and who has the Excel skills to handle reporting as well as the books. It's a great step up for someone who wants real responsibility and the chance to grow into analytical and advisory work.
What you'll be doing
- Bookkeeping for a portfolio of clients on Xero, Sage and Freeagent
- Preparing and submitting VAT returns
- Running client payroll, including PAYE, pensions/auto-enrolment, RTI, and statutory payments
- Producing a daily management ("flash") report for a key client in Excel (full training given)
- Producing monthly churn data and summary reports for clients
- General finance administration to keep the practice running smoothly
What we're looking for (essential)
- 1 to 2 years' hands-on bookkeeping experience, ideally in a practice or multi-client environment
- Confident, hands-on experience with Xero and other softwares
- VAT return preparation experience
- Payroll processing experience
- Advanced Excel, confident with lookups (VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP), multiple/nested IF logic, and PivotTables, used daily. This is genuinely essential, not a nice-to-have.
- Someone who takes ownership, works accurately at pace, and doesn't need close supervision
- The unrestricted, ongoing right to work in the UK (no sponsorship available)
Desirable
- Part-qualified or actively studying (ACCA, ACA or CIMA)
- Some exposure to management or flash reporting
Why join us
- Study support towards ACCA, ACA or CIMA. We cover exam fees and study materials, plus study leave
- Company pension scheme
- Annual performance bonus
- Annual salary review
- Casual dress
- 30% EE mobile discount
- The opportunity to learn beyond core bookkeeping, with real exposure to our sister company's fractional CFO / FD services and financial analytics work
- A genuinely small, supportive team where your work has real, visible impact and clear room to grow
Note: Shortlisted candidates will complete a short, practical bookkeeping and Excel exercise before or at interview. Please only apply if you're genuinely confident with bookkeeping and with Excel at an intermediate-to-advanced level.
Job Types: Permanent, Full-time
Pay: £28,000.00-£31,000.00 per year
