About Us
D.C. Merrett & Co. Ltd is a well-established, family-run business based south of Gloucester, delivering specialist services in abnormal load heavy haulage, wastewater logistics, and commercial engineering. For over 30 years, we have built our reputation on reliability, expertise, and exceptional customer service. Our commitment to quality, investment in our fleet, and dedication to our people have made us a trusted name within the industries we serve.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for a skilled Fabricator / Welder to join our experienced workshop team. This is a hands-on role offering exceptional variety, where no two days are the same. You'll work alongside our engineers to support the maintenance, repair, and modification of both our own specialist fleet and the vehicles and equipment of external customers.
Unlike a typical fabrication role, you'll be working on a wide range of bespoke and specialist equipment. One day you could be repairing a heavy haulage trailer, the next carrying out repairs to piling and auger equipment, before moving on to manufacturing a bespoke hitch assembly for a Scania tractor unit or producing custom-engineered components to support our customers' operations.
Our reputation is built on reliability and problem-solving. We support a diverse range of industries that rely on us to keep their equipment operational, safe, and fit for purpose. If you enjoy variety, taking ownership of projects, and producing high-quality workmanship, you'll fit right in.
What You'll Be Doing
- Fabricating, repairing, and modifying a variety of specialist vehicles, trailers, attachments, and equipment.
- Operating different metal works tools including grinders, drills & saws.
- Using our CAD system to create and prepare parts for manufacture and operating a CNC plasma cutting table to accurately cut steel components.
- Supporting the workshop team with maintenance and repair work across our own fleet and customer fleets.
- Carrying out repairs and refurbishment of augers, piling equipment, and associated machinery.
- Manufacturing bespoke components, assemblies, and attachments to customer specifications.
- Reading and interpreting technical drawings and working from measurements when required.
Why You'll Succeed Here
- You'll enjoy working on specialist, non-standard equipment instead of repetitive production-line fabrication.
- You'll have the opportunity to manufacture bespoke components and see projects through from concept to completion.
- You'll be challenged by a diverse workload spanning transport, engineering, construction, and agriculture.
- You'll take pride in solving practical engineering problems and producing work of the highest standard.
- You'll be part of a close-knit, family-run business where your skills, ideas, and contribution genuinely matter.
Personal Requirements
- Proven experience in fabrication and welding, with competency in MIG welding and experience in TIG, Stick (MMA), or other heavy fabrication processes being advantageous.
- Ability to read engineering drawings and work accurately from measurements.
- Experience working with heavy plant, commercial vehicles, trailers, agricultural equipment, or similar machinery would be beneficial.
- A practical and proactive approach to problem-solving.
- High standards of workmanship and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team.
- Full UK driving licence preferred.
What We Offer
- Competitive rate of pay.
- Overtime paid at enhanced rates.
- Company pension scheme.
- Varied and rewarding work on specialist equipment and bespoke engineering projects.
- A well-equipped workshop and supportive working environment.
- The opportunity to develop your skills across multiple industries and disciplines.
