About the role
Balfour Beatty, working in partnership with Rolls-Royce, is seeking an experienced and technically driven BMS Design Manager to support the delivery of complex and high-profile engineering projects across the Rolls-Royce estate in Derby.
This is a pivotal role within our project delivery team, responsible for ensuring Building Management Systems are effectively integrated into the design, commissioning, and operation of critical MEP infrastructure. From the earliest stages of project development, you will undertake detailed reviews of tender and design information, assessing the sufficiency of control strategies and identifying opportunities to enhance system performance, operability, and maintainability. You will also provide technical support to estimating and pre-construction teams, helping to shape robust and innovative BMS solutions from project inception.
As the technical lead for BMS design, you will manage specialist subcontractor design packages, reviewing and approving key deliverables including Descriptions of Operation, control panel drawings, equipment submittals, and associated technical documentation. Working closely with design consultants, project managers, commissioning teams, and specialist contractors, you will ensure that MEP systems are designed with the appropriate controls, devices, and interfaces required to support effective commissioning and long-term operational performance.
What you'll be doing
As a Design Manager you will:
- Lead and manage the design and development of Building Management Systems across multiple projects and facilities.
- Produce, review, and approve BMS design documentation, specifications, drawings, and technical submissions.
- Ensure all BMS designs comply with industry standards, client requirements, and relevant legislation.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, controls, and project teams to deliver integrated engineering solutions.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance throughout project delivery.
- Support project planning, design reviews, risk assessments, and value engineering initiatives.
- Manage relationships with specialist contractors, consultants, and technology providers.
- Oversee commissioning strategies and provide technical support during installation and handover phases.
Who we're looking for
You will have the following:
- Proven experience in BMS design, controls engineering, or building automation systems.
- Previous experience managing complex BMS design projects within industrial, commercial, or critical environments.
- Strong understanding of HVAC controls, energy management systems, smart buildings, and integrated building technologies.
- Knowledge of industry-standard BMS platforms and control systems.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and engineering standards.
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and leadership skills.
- Degree, HNC/HND, or equivalent qualification in Building Services Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Professional accreditation or membership of a relevant engineering institution is desirable.
