About the role
Shard End Pharmacy is looking for a reliable, professional and customer-focused Delivery Driver to join our pharmacy team.
You will be responsible for delivering prescription medicines and other pharmacy items safely and promptly to patients in the local community. Many of the people receiving deliveries may be elderly, vulnerable or unable to visit the pharmacy themselves, so a polite, patient and respectful approach is essential.
The position will initially be for approximately 16–20 hours per week. As our delivery service and prescription volumes increase, we expect the number of available hours to increase accordingly. However, additional hours cannot be guaranteed and will depend on the needs of the pharmacy.
The successful applicant will be required to use their own suitable and reliable vehicle. Business mileage will be reimbursed at 25p per mile.
Main responsibilities
- Collect prepared prescriptions and delivery items from the pharmacy.
- Deliver medicines safely, accurately and within the planned delivery schedule.
- Use the pharmacy’s delivery app to access assigned deliveries, plan routes and record delivery outcomes.
- Confirm the identity of the person receiving the delivery and obtain any required signatures or electronic confirmation.
- Follow pharmacy procedures for unsuccessful deliveries, absent patients, refused deliveries and items that must be returned to the pharmacy.
- Keep medicines secure and out of public view while they are in your vehicle.
- Return any undelivered medicines and completed documentation promptly to the pharmacy.
- Communicate with the pharmacy team regarding delays, address problems, delivery concerns or vulnerable patients requiring further support.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and never disclose information about a patient, their medicines or their health.
- Drive safely and comply with road traffic laws at all times.
- Represent Shard End Pharmacy professionally when dealing with patients, carers, GP practices, care providers and members of the public.
Essential requirements
Applicants must:
- Hold a full, valid UK driving licence.
- Have regular access to their own reliable and roadworthy car.
- Have appropriate motor insurance that covers business use and the delivery of medicines for work.
- Ensure their vehicle remains properly taxed, insured and, where applicable, has a valid MOT.
- Have a safe and responsible driving record.
- Be comfortable using a smartphone and delivery-routing application.
- Be dependable, punctual and able to manage their time effectively.
- Be able to work independently while following pharmacy procedures.
- Have good communication and customer-service skills.
- Be respectful and considerate when dealing with elderly, vulnerable or unwell patients.
- Understand the importance of confidentiality, accuracy and the secure handling of medicines.
- Have the right to work in the UK.
Desirable
- Previous delivery-driving or multi-drop delivery experience.
- Previous experience working in a pharmacy, healthcare or customer-service environment.
- Familiarity with Shard End and the surrounding Birmingham area.
Additional information
Employment will be subject to satisfactory references and the production of appropriate driving, vehicle and insurance documents.
The driver will be expected to notify the pharmacy immediately of any changes affecting their driving licence, insurance, vehicle condition or ability to drive safely.
Full training will be provided on the delivery application, pharmacy delivery procedures, confidentiality, medicine security and the management of unsuccessful deliveries.
Work location: On the road, with deliveries beginning and ending at Shard End Pharmacy.
