Job Description
A leading automotive manufacturing business is seeking a Toolroom Support Operative to join its engineering and tooling team in Telford.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with previous experience within a toolroom, workshop, or engineering environment who is looking to further develop their technical skills within a modern manufacturing operation.
The successful candidate will work closely with experienced Toolmakers, supporting tooling maintenance, machining, assembly, and preventative maintenance activities, with long-term development opportunities into a fully skilled Toolroom Die Maintenance Technician role.
The Role
The Toolroom Support Operative will support the day-to-day activities of the Toolroom department, ensuring tooling is maintained, repaired, and prepared to meet production requirements safely and efficiently.
This is a hands-on engineering position suited to an individual with a strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the preparation, maintenance, and repair of production tooling.
- Support Toolmakers during planned and reactive maintenance activities.
- Clean tooling and assist with preventative maintenance processes.
- Support the repair and maintenance of tooling ancillary items.
- Learn to identify tooling faults and support corrective actions.
- Assist with machining activities using lathes, mills, grinders, and other workshop equipment.
- Support tool assembly, alignment checks, and testing activities.
- Carry out basic inspections using gauges, micrometers, and height indicators.
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment in line with 5S principles.
- Follow all company health & safety procedures, PPE requirements, and safe working practices.
- Work collaboratively with Toolroom, Production, and Quality departments.
Experience and Skills
Essential
- Engineering apprenticeship, NVQ, BTEC, or equivalent engineering qualification.
- Interest in engineering, manufacturing, or toolmaking.
- Mechanical aptitude with good problem-solving ability.
- Willingness to learn and develop technical skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and work safely.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organised approach to work.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
Desirable
- Previous experience using hand tools or workshop equipment.
- Basic machining knowledge including lathe, milling, or grinding operations.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
- Previous experience within a manufacturing, workshop, or toolroom environment.
