Experienced Bicycle Mechanic
Full-time, permanent | Manchester and Stockport
Join Never Mind the Bike Shops
Never Mind the Bike Shops is an independent, rider-owned bicycle business with workshops in Manchester city centre and Stockport.
We have grown through high-quality repairs, honest advice, strong customer service and a genuine commitment to cycling in Greater Manchester. With a third shop planned, we are looking for bright, motivated bicycle mechanics who want to help us take on the next stage of the challenge.
We are not a corporate chain, and we are not interested in bike-shop snobbery. We repair everything from everyday commuters and well-used family bikes to premium road, mountain and electric bikes. Every customer should receive the same level of care, expertise and straight-talking service.
The Role
We are looking for an experienced bicycle mechanic who can deliver consistently high-quality work while contributing positively to a busy, growing workshop.
You will work across our business as required, supporting workshop operations, bike preparation, customer service and the continued development of our team.
This is an opportunity to join an ambitious independent business, take responsibility and potentially progress into a workshop leadership or management role as we expand.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose faults and complete servicing and repairs to a professional standard.
- Work confidently across a wide range of bicycles, components and price points.
- Produce accurate repair estimates and explain recommendations clearly to customers.
- Manage your workload effectively and help the workshop meet its weekly labour targets.
- Support the organisation of workshop bookings, lead times and daily priorities.
- Complete safety checks and ensure bikes are properly prepared before collection.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, organisation and workshop presentation.
- Monitor commonly used parts, consumables, tools and personal protective equipment.
- Help train and support less-experienced mechanics and bike builders.
- Contact customers by telephone, email or text with updates and collection arrangements.
- Build, unpack and prepare boxed bicycles when required.
- Follow all company health and safety procedures.
- Make every customer feel welcome, respected and properly looked after.
About You
You will be a capable and organised mechanic who takes pride in completing work correctly.
You should be comfortable working independently, contributing to a team and communicating directly with customers. You will understand that technical ability matters, but reliability, judgement and customer service are just as important.
We are looking for someone who:
- Has at least two years’ experience in a professional bicycle workshop.
- Can service and repair bicycles to a consistently high standard.
- Holds Cytech Level 2, Level 3 or equivalent practical experience.
- Has strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
- Communicates clearly with customers and colleagues.
- Can prepare accurate and commercially sensible repair quotations.
- Understands workshop productivity, labour pricing and time management.
- Is organised, dependable and willing to take responsibility.
- Has a broad knowledge of bicycle components, brands and suppliers.
- Is willing to learn new systems, products and technologies.
- Can safely lift and handle bicycles weighing more than 25kg.
- Is available to work Saturdays.
Experience with electric bikes, hydraulic systems, electronic gearing, Bosch or Shimano diagnostics, wheel building, suspension servicing or workshop management would be particularly valuable.
How We Work
Quality without the clique
We take the work seriously without taking ourselves too seriously. Great service should be available to every cyclist, not only people with expensive bikes.
Straight talking
We explain what a bike needs, what it does not need and what the options are. We want customers to understand the work and trust our recommendations.
Teamwork
Leave the ego at the door. Everyone contributes, everyone keeps learning and everyone helps when the workshop gets busy.
Community
We are Manchester and Stockport owned. We support practical cycling, education, accessibility and the everyday people who rely on bikes.
Growth
We have built a resilient business across workshops, bike sales, mobile repairs, online retail, events and education. Our next stage includes opening a third shop, and we want the right people to grow with us.
What We Offer
- Full-time, permanent employment.
- A varied role within an independent and expanding bicycle business.
- Opportunities for additional training and professional development.
- Potential progression into workshop leadership or management.
- Company pension.
- Employee and store discounts.
- Casual workwear.
- Free or on-site parking where available.
- The opportunity to help shape the future of Never Mind the Bike Shops.
