Are you fluent in British Sign Language (BSL) and passionate about supporting Deaf individuals to live independently and confidently? Do you have experience working with people with visual impairments and enjoy creative, community-focused work?
I am a profoundly Deaf British Sign Language user with Usher Syndrome, which means I am also visually impaired. While I can walk unaided, I have no peripheral vision and need guiding support to help me navigate obstacles such as uneven surfaces, children, or dogs. In low-light or dark conditions, I experience complete blindness and require physical guiding support — some knowledge of Hands-on Signing would be helpful, though support during dark conditions is rare.
I’m an honest and enthusiastic person who enjoys meeting new people and trying new things. I’m creative and love crafting and hands-on projects, and I thrive in lively environments where I can share ideas and positivity. I’m passionate about promoting Deaf Awareness and BSL in the wider community and currently teach children and adults BSL through voluntary work.
We are looking for a self-employed British Sign Language (BSL) Communication Guide to assist me in various aspects of daily life. This role includes providing BSL communication support — such as translating letters, making phone calls, and writing emails — and offering guiding support to ensure my safety when navigating different environments. You’ll also accompany me to social activities, like an art group, and drive me to meetings, appointments, and shopping trips. Occasionally, you may assist with communication support related to my voluntary BSL teaching. Flexibility is important, as the role may evolve with new opportunities.
We are looking for someone who is qualified in BSL Level 4 or 6 (Level 3 may be considered with the right experience and personal qualities). Experience supporting individuals with visual impairments is highly desirable. You should be honest, patient, and have a good sense of humour, as well as being creative and open to new experiences. An understanding of Asian and Muslim culture is essential to provide appropriate and culturally sensitive support.
If you’re a confident signer who values inclusion, creativity, and empowering Deaf individuals, we’d love to hear from you. Join me in breaking down barriers, promoting Deaf Awareness, and making every day meaningful and full of opportunity.
