Production Preparation Operative (Steelwork & Metalwork)
James Cowie and Co Ltd, established in 1962, is a specialist steel fabricator for the construction, infrastructure, telecommunications, renewables, and mechanical engineering sectors, manufacturing structural steelwork and metalwork.
Due to continued growth, we are looking to recruit an experienced Production Preparation Operative to join our busy preparation department at our manufacturing facility.
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience.
About the Role
This is a hands-on role within our Production Preparation Department, preparing structural steelwork and metalwork for fabrication. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring materials are processed accurately and efficiently while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Operating steel preparation machinery, including but not limited to CNC drill lines, band saws, Plasma Tables and associated equipment.
- Reading and interpreting engineering and fabrication drawings.
- Loading and unloading steel sections using overhead cranes (training can be provided if required).
- Identifying, issuing and organising materials for production.
- Carrying out quality checks to ensure components meet specification before fabrication.
- Working to production schedules while maintaining excellent attention to detail.
- Maintaining a clean, organised and safe working environment.
- Complying with all company Health & Safety procedures.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Previous experience within a structural steelwork or heavy engineering environment.
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings.
- Experience operating steel preparation machinery.
- Good understanding of steel sections, plate and fabrication processes.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.
- Reliable, self-motivated and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong awareness of Health & Safety within a manufacturing environment.
Desirable
- Experience operating a CNC Machine.
- Overhead crane licence or experience.
- Forklift licence/Side Loader Licence.
- Experience preparing materials for structural steel fabrication.
- Basic computer skills for operating CNC machinery.
