Overview
We are a busy boatyard based in Southwold, Suffolk, looking for a well rounded Marine Engineer to join our team.
We work on a wide range of leisure boats and marine engines, so this is a varied, hands-on role with no two days necessarily being the same. Our work ranges from routine servicing and maintenance through to fault finding, major repairs and complete engine rebuilds.
Some of the typical engines we work with include Yanmar, Beta, Volvo Penta, Nanni, Perkins and Vetus, as well as a variety of marine propulsion and mechanical systems.
The Role
The role will involve a wide variety of marine engineering work, including:
- Routine servicing and maintenance of clients' boats.
- Engine servicing, oil and filter changes, belts, hoses and cooling systems.
- Diagnosing and repairing engine faults.
- Engine removal and installation.
- Major engine repairs and rebuilds.
- Gearbox and propulsion system maintenance.
- Propeller shaft and stern gear work.
- Propeller removal, fitting and burnishing.
- Anode replacement and underwater running gear maintenance.
- Fuel, exhaust and cooling system repairs.
- Winterisation and recommissioning of boats.
- General mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance.
- Working alongside the wider boatyard team on larger projects.
The work is varied, and you'll need to be comfortable working both in the workshop and onboard boats, sometimes in tight or awkward spaces.
The ideal candidate would be:
- Practical and hands-on – someone who enjoys getting stuck into a job and is confident working things out when faced with a problem.
- A good problem solver – able to think logically, diagnose faults and find practical solutions rather than giving up when things don't go to plan.
- A team player – willing to work alongside colleagues, share knowledge and help out across the boatyard when needed.
- A good communicator – able to communicate clearly with colleagues and explain technical issues in a straightforward way.
- Comfortable speaking with customers – professional, approachable and confident discussing work with boat owners and explaining what needs to be done.
- Reliable and responsible – takes pride in their work, turns up, gets the job done and can be trusted to work on customers' boats.
- Attention to detail – understands the importance of doing a job properly, particularly when working on customers' engines and boats.
- Self-motivated – able to work independently, manage their own workload and use their initiative without needing constant supervision.
About You
We're looking for someone with good practical mechanical skills and experience working with diesel engines. Previous marine engineering experience would be ideal, but with opportunity for learning from our current team we welcome applications from a variety of experience levels.
A relevant engineering qualification and basic marine electrical knowledge would be an advantage, but practical ability, experience and attitude are just as important to us.
What We Offer
This is an excellent opportunity to join an established boatyard where you'll get to work on a genuinely varied range of boats and engineering jobs.
You'll have the opportunity to develop your skills across multiple engine manufacturers and marine systems, with work ranging from straightforward servicing to complex mechanical repairs and engine rebuilds.
