Technical Surveyor
£32,000–£42,000 per year, depending on experience
Full-time | UK-wide travel | Typically 2–3 nights away per week
ecoTrus is looking for an experienced, technically minded Technical Surveyor to join our growing team.
This is not simply a measuring role.
Our Technical Surveyor is one of the most important links between the customer, the property and our design and engineering team. You will survey residential properties across the UK for our self-build, trade and Approved Installer projects, gathering the information our team needs to design and manufacture the ecoTrus structural loft system.
You will therefore need to develop a strong understanding of the ecoTrus system, its capabilities and its limitations, and be able to identify potential issues before a project reaches detailed design.
The role
Your responsibilities will include:
- Carrying out detailed technical surveys of residential properties throughout the UK
- Surveying loft spaces, existing roof structures, wall positions, floor layouts and relevant structural details
- Taking accurate measurements, photographs, scans and site information
- Reading and understanding architectural drawings and plans
- Identifying property construction types and potential structural or installation challenges
- Understanding whether a proposed loft design is practical and compatible with the ecoTrus system
- Discussing proposed projects confidently with homeowners, builders, architects and tradespeople
- Explaining technical matters clearly to people who may not have a construction background
- Feeding accurate and organised survey information back to our design and engineering team
- Highlighting risks, unusual construction details or missing information before the project progresses
- Working closely with our designers, engineers and technical team
- Maintaining accurate records and survey documentation
- Managing your own travel and survey schedule effectively
What we're looking for
The right person will have a strong practical understanding of houses and residential construction.
You may currently work as a building surveyor, architectural technician, site manager, carpenter, loft conversion specialist, building control surveyor, structural technician or in another construction-related role.
More important than your current job title is your ability to look at a building and understand how it has been constructed.
You should have:
- Excellent knowledge of residential property construction
- Experience surveying, measuring or assessing buildings
- The ability to read architectural drawings and plans
- Excellent attention to detail
- Strong problem-solving ability
- Excellent communication and people skills
- Confidence dealing with homeowners, builders, architects and other professionals
- Good written communication and reporting skills
- Confidence using smartphones, tablets and digital survey tools
- The ability to work independently and make sensible decisions on site
- Strong organisation and time-management skills
- A professional and presentable manner
- A full UK driving licence
- The flexibility to travel throughout the UK
Travel
This is a national surveying role and applicants must be comfortable travelling.
There will normally be approximately two nights away from home each week, although some weeks may require three nights away, depending on the location and number of surveys.
Travel and accommodation will be arranged/covered by the company.
Training
You do not need to arrive knowing the ecoTrus system.
We will provide detailed training on:
- The ecoTrus structural system
- Our surveying standards
- Different property and roof types
- System capabilities and design limitations
- Our digital surveying and scanning process
- The information required by our design and engineering team
However, you must already understand buildings. We can teach someone the ecoTrus system; teaching somebody years of practical understanding of residential construction is much harder.
Salary
£32,000–£42,000 depending on experience and capability.
For us, finding the right person is more important than fitting somebody into a predetermined salary band, so we are happy to discuss the overall package with an exceptional candidate.
Other requirements
Appointment will be subject to:
- References
- Right-to-work checks
- Driving licence checks
- A satisfactory Basic DBS check
About ecoTrus
ecoTrus is a patented light-gauge steel structural system developed specifically for loft conversions.
Our system replaces much of the traditional structural steel and timber work associated with loft conversions with a precision-engineered steel superstructure, designed off-site and manufactured specifically for each property.
As the business continues to grow nationally through homeowners, trade customers and our Approved Installer network, accurate technical surveying is critical to ensuring every project starts with the correct information.
We are looking for somebody who wants to become a genuine technical expert in the ecoTrus system, rather than simply somebody looking for their next surveying job.
