A telehandler operator in a waste management company is
responsible for safely and efficiently operating telescopic handlers to move, sort, and load waste, recyclables, and various materials within a fast-paced environment. Unlike construction sites, this role focuses on handling bulk waste, feeding sorting lines, and loading high-sided vehicles or skips.
- Waste Handling & Processing:Operating a telehandler to lift and transport waste materials (e.g., electronic waste, fridges, aggregates) to designated processing areas or storage bays.
- Loading Vehicles: Loading outgoing HGVs, skips, and containers with recyclables or processed materials, such as baled materials, for transportation.
- Site Maintenance & Safety:Performing daily pre-use checks, maintenance, and cleaning of the machinery to ensure safe operation, reporting any defects immediately.
- Yard Management: Sorting, stacking, and organizing materials to maintain a tidy and safe working environment.
- Feeding Operations: Loading waste materials into processing machinery, such as sorting lines, shredders, screeners, or compactors.
- Hours of work 07.00 to 16.30 - 40 hrs basic pay - over 40 hours at time and half.
- Flexibility: Assisting with manual ground-level duties, such as sorting, when not operating the machine, as required by site management.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Valid License/Ticket: A valid Telehandler License (e.g., CPCS or NPORS) is mandatory, with experience with attachments like buckets, grabs, or bale clamps often required.
- Waste Industry Experience: Previous experience in a waste management, recycling, or fast-paced industrial environment is usually required.
- Safety Compliance: Strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations is essential.
- Physical Fitness: Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and handle manual tasks, such as manual sorting or using a shovel, in addition to operating machinery.
