Overview
We have an exciting opportunity for a School Cleaner at Radlett Preparatory School, 17.5 hours per week, 5.00pm-8.30pm Monday to Friday, term time only plus 3 weeks during school holidays. The main purpose of this role is to maintain a clean, safe, and hygienic environment across the school, ensuring that classrooms, corridors, toilets, and shared areas are kept to a high standard for pupils, staff, and visitors.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Daily Cleaning
· Sweep, mop, vacuum and wash floors in classrooms, corridors, offices, and communal areas.
· Empty bins and dispose of waste in accordance with school procedures.
· Loading and emptying dishwashers
· Clean and disinfect toilets, sinks, washrooms and surrounds.
· Wipe and disinfect tables, chairs, desks, and work surfaces.
· Wipe furniture, ledges, pipes, paintwork, doors and polish door glass.
· Clean internal glass, doors, and touchpoints (handles, switches, rails).
· Replenish hygiene supplies such as soap, paper towels, and toilet rolls.
· Checking and closing windows, switching off lights after work.
· Completing an annual deep clean of classrooms, staffrooms, kitchen, dining areas, and other frequently used spaces on school premises.
· Complete termly upkeep cleaning of classrooms, staffrooms, kitchen, dining areas, food tech areas and other frequently used spaces on school premises including high- and low-level dusting.
· Such other duties as may be allocated from time to time.
General Maintenance of Cleanliness
· Ensure cleaning equipment is used safely and stored appropriately.
· Report any damage, hazards, or maintenance issues to the Site Manager.
· Follow cleaning schedules and checklists consistently.
· Safely handle and dilute cleaning chemicals in line with COSHH guidelines.
Health & Safety
· Maintain a safe working environment for pupils and staff at all times.
· Follow school safeguarding policies; report concerns immediately.
· Use warning signs (e.g., “Wet Floor”) appropriately.
· Wear PPE where required.
· Ensure security of the building i.e. check windows and doors are closed/locked.
Additional Tasks
· Assist with deep cleaning during school holidays (e.g., kettle descaling, cleaning of fridges, carpets, walls, furniture, stripping and sealing floors, high level dusting, wall washing).
· Support with event clean‑up where needed.
· Carry out any other reasonable cleaning duties as directed by line management.
School Holidays deep cleaning schedule:
- Last week (Monday-Friday) of August across 2-3 days (16.5hrs) as pre agreed with line manager = 49.50 hrs in total by 3 members of staff
- February half term across 2-3 days (16.5hrs) as pre agreed with line manager = 49.50hrs in total by 3 members of staff
- Remaining 16.5hrs will be spread across x6 staff INSET days as per school calendar
Person Specification
Essential
· Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently.
· Good attention to detail.
· Understanding of basic cleaning practices.
· Ability to follow instructions and procedures.
· Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
Desirable
· Previous experience in a school or commercial cleaning role.
· Knowledge of COSHH regulations.
· Willingness to undertake training.
