A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for an Audiology Manager to join Hillingdon Hospital. You will be working with our four teams that make up this service including Adult Audiology, Paediatric Audiology, Hearing therapy and Newborn hearing screening. This will be a job-share with our existing manager. We are fortunate to have a brand new build at Hillingdon Hospital which our Adult team are moving into this month, we also have a bespoke unit on our Mount Vernon site with excellent facilities for our paediatric patients. The audiology service sits within the Therapies service in the Unplanned Care Division, this boasts the close networking and support of other senior managers in this service.
This is a great time to join the team to build on the work of the current manager by improving performance, quality and patient experience as well as maintaining the high assurance the services have recently achieved from the ICB in a recent National Capability Assessment for Paediatric Audiology Services.

The post holder will co-lead and facilitate the development and performance of the Trust’s Audiology, Hearing Therapy and Newborn Hearing Services ensuring that service provision is safe, effective and reflects best practice. The manager will be an effective member of the Trust’s Unplanned Care Division, making a professional and personal contribution. The post holder will be responsible for financially and operationally managing adult audiology, hearing therapy, paediatric audiology and newborn hearing screening services. There will also be an expectation to hold a small caseload within the paediatric audiology team.
The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute Hospital in the London Borough of Hillingdon and offers a wide range of services including accident and emergency, inpatient care, day surgery, outpatient clinics and maternity services. The Trust’s services at Mount Vernon Hospital include routine day surgery, delivered at a modern treatment centre, a minor injuries unit and outpatient clinics.

- To act as professional lead for the Audiology services for the Trust, ensuring staff are appropriately skilled, developed and managed and patient care is delivered to a high standard.
- To ensure the service meets operational performance targets and demonstrates best value, an evidence-based approach and responsiveness to the needs of the local population
- To provide professional advice for the Trust, Commissioners, Social Care and Primary Care Networks. To ensure operational arrangements for day-to-day management of the services are in place.
- To ensure that the values of the Trust are reflected in the delivery of the service.
- To provide clinical expertise within the Audiology service supporting senior staff as required, as well as holding a small patient caseload within the paediatric audiology team.
- To be responsible for the effective use of the allocated budget and implement agreed actions in liaison with the Therapy Services Manager, Divisional leads and Finance.
- To be responsible for signing off invoices for audiology specific patient management systems, equipment, consumables, and other service costs.
- To ensure appropriate clinical equipment is available, calibrated and maintained to run the Audiology Services.
- To be competent to provide clinical input across adult and paediatric audiology and new born hearing screening and hold a specialist clinical caseload, delivering to a high standard.
- To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of new born hearing screening and audiological management of patients and of factors impacting delivery of these services.
- To be responsible for the creation, interpretation and implementation of clinical protocols for clinical pathways within the service.
- To communicate and liaise with the multidisciplinary team in providing highly specialised advice concerning the management of patients within the managed services
- To be responsible for liaising with services to ensure calibration and maintenance of equipment.
- To ensure personal and service adherence to clinical record keeping and data capture in accordance with Trust, professional and departmental standards.
- As a senior member of staff, to undertake root cause analysis investigations as required
- To develop an innovative staffing strategy for the service, to facilitate a flexible work force able to respond to the changing demands of the service.
- To ensure staff are appraised within Trust timeframes, conducting appraisals for direct reports, undertaking training needs analysis and ensuring appropriate staff development is in place
- To ensure systems are in place to monitor and manage staff absence within the service and ensure appropriate action is taken to maintain safe staffing levels.
- To ensure a framework and culture in which staff are encouraged to contribute fully to the service and in a way that is conducive to high morale and delivery of ongoing service improvement.
- To encourage team working and develop the role of multidisciplinary teams as a means of delivering patient care and opportunities for staff development.
- To ensure agreed models of appraisal and supervision of all staff are implemented and ensure that staff have set objectives that reflect the Trusts and national strategies and plans.
- To contribute to workforce planning in relation to Audiology staff.
- To be responsible for grievance and disciplinary procedures with the support of HR and the Therapy Services Manager.
- To be responsible for the department’s compliance with Trust Policies including Health and Safety and departmental policies.
- As a senior member of the Trust to support human resources by undertaking investigations as required.
- To link with staff, HEIs and other audiology services within the sector to ensure sufficient and effective pre-registration student placements.
- To establish service objectives and Business Plans for the services which support the strategic direction of Therapy Services and The Trust within the local economy and provide a service that is clinically effective and evolves to meet population needs.
- To develop and adapt appropriate service arrangements, with engagement of staff, so that patient care is provided in a way that is efficient and responsive to change in service demand and provided within resources.
- To be accountable for the effective use of resources within the service reviewing the allocation of resources, identifying cost pressures and initiating change where necessary.
- To ensure value for money in service provision, looking for opportunities to bring about improvements to the service, optimise contribution and identify cost improvement measures.
- To identify and take an innovative approach to the development of appropriate opportunities for growth.
- To work with the Therapy Service Manager, Finance and Commissioning Departments to develop, establish and oversee monitoring of and adherence to Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for the managed services, as appropriate.
- To contribute to the development of Business plans for the managed services.
- To manage the delegated budget, identifying variance and taking appropriate corrective action.
- To be responsible for budget spend on consumables, resources and capital equipment for the department and ensure controls are in place in line with Trust Policy.
- To be the main signatory for the department budget and responsible for authorising invoices.
- To provide professional advice within the local health economy.
- To ensure the department has robust clinical effectiveness strategies, including risk management and development of an audit programme.
- To ensure collection and timely recording of data relating to clinical activity, ensuring accurate interpretation, appropriate communication and dissemination of service information.
- To facilitate the production of patient information and educational material which is updated regularly in line with Trust protocols and current guidelines and designed to meet the cultural needs of the clients using the service.
- To ensure appropriate risk assessment and health and safety checks are carried out within the department and comply with the Trusts reporting requirements. To maintain a live risk register, reporting on risk management and escalating issues as appropriate.
- To take a lead role in improving the quality of patient care and ensuring that information from research and audit is made available to develop services.
- To promote relationships with all partner organisations across the local community.
- To work in close association with Directors, Service Managers and Educators to ensure an integrated multidisciplinary approach to service provision, education and audit activities.
- To develop and maintain effective and inclusive working relationships with others Trust-wide and to be able to build alliances with other organisations and external partners.
- To actively seek opportunities for feedback from service users, incorporating these views in service delivery and standards.
- To develop appropriate local, regional and national networks with managers of similar services.
- To be able to present information concisely to large groups of people to relay service information e.g. to enable new protocols and guidelines to be introduced across the Trust to enable consistent patient care.
- To be able to communicate complex and often sensitive or emotive information (such as the diagnosis of hearing loss)
- To be responsible for verbal and written communication of the assessment and /or intervention to patients, carers and the wider multidisciplinary team and external agencies as appropriate.
- To maintain data records using computerised systems. To participate in obtaining information necessary for contract and quality monitoring. Ensuring familiarity with Trust IT systems as required
- To be able to communicate effectively with profoundly deaf people including those who rely on sign language and patients requiring language interpreters
- To counsel distressed patients and their carers on hearing loss or associated problems, including those with cognitive impairment or illnesses
- To work in close association with others within and external to the Trust to ensure an integrated multidisciplinary approach to service provision, education and audit activities.
- To develop and maintain effective and inclusive working relationships with others Trust-wide and to be able to build alliances with other organisations and external partners.
- To lead on clinical governance issues for the Audiology Teams.
- To work with professional heads and Therapy Services Manager, to ensure that effective activity, quality, audit and other measures of performance required are collected, reported (e.g. in a Clinical Governance Plan) and continually reviewed and evaluated. This will require creating and updating databases for audit or quality data with a requirement for prolonged concentration.

- To be responsible for identifying and managing risks within the services in line with local risk management processes.
- To devise and implement plans to develop clinical practice of staff.
- To ensure clinical care is monitored and clinical excellence is promoted.
