The opportunity
B Y Surveys Ltd is seeking an experienced and dependable Land Surveyor to join our growing survey team.
This is a permanent UK-based position supporting topographical, engineering, control and measured survey projects throughout the country. The successful applicant will also be required to undertake an initial extended deployment to the Falkland Islands, potentially lasting approximately 10–12 weeks.
Following the overseas deployment, the position will continue in the UK across B Y Surveys Ltd’s wider project portfolio.
The role would suit a capable field surveyor who can work independently, supervise a Survey Assistant and take responsibility for the quality and completeness of their work.
Key responsibilities
- Undertaking detailed topographical and engineering surveys.
- Establishing, observing and verifying survey-control networks.
- Operating Trimble total stations, GNSS receivers and digital levels.
- Surveying buildings, roads, drainage, utilities, structures, ground features and site infrastructure.
- Setting out and checking works where required.
- Completing control observations, traverses and level runs.
- Checking instrument setup, calibration status and survey tolerances.
- Supervising and directing a Survey Assistant.
- Planning daily survey activities within an allocated work area.
- Downloading, checking and securely transferring survey data at the end of each shift.
- Completing daily diaries, progress records and survey reports.
- Identifying missing information or potential quality issues before leaving an area.
- Maintaining clear field sketches, station descriptions and photographic records.
- Ensuring equipment is correctly stored, charged and maintained.
- Following project specifications, method statements, risk assessments and quality procedures.
- Communicating progress, technical queries and site constraints to the Project Manager or Director.
- Taking responsibility for the accuracy, completeness and traceability of collected survey data.
Essential requirements
Applicants must:
- Be currently based in the United Kingdom and have the legal right to work in the UK.
- Hold a full, valid UK driving licence.
- Have at least three years of practical land-surveying experience.
- Be competent in detailed topographical and engineering survey work.
- Be experienced in operating total stations and GNSS equipment.
- Understand survey control, traversing, levelling and basic adjustment principles.
- Be able to work independently from drawings, specifications and written survey instructions.
- Be able to manage a Survey Assistant and organise daily field activities.
- Produce accurate, clearly coded and well-structured survey data.
- Be able to satisfy all client security and pre-employment screening requirements, including BPSS where required.
- Provide a complete and verifiable employment and residential history for at least the previous three years.
- Be willing to undertake extended overseas deployments.
- Be comfortable working long hours outdoors in cold, windy and changeable conditions.
- Be prepared to work up to 12-hour shifts and six-day working weeks during overseas deployments when required.
- Be dependable, safety-conscious and capable of working effectively as part of a small team in a remote environment.
- Satisfy all applicable Falkland Islands entry, work-permit and project requirements.
Qualifications and desirable experience
The following would be advantageous:
- HNC, HND, degree or equivalent qualification in land surveying, geomatics or civil engineering.
- Experience using Trimble surveying equipment.
- Experience with Trimble Business Center, AutoCAD, N4ce or similar survey-processing software.
- Experience establishing and checking high-accuracy survey control.
- Experience with digital levelling and precise level runs.
- Knowledge of PAS 128 utility surveying.
- Experience working on highways, airfields, defence sites or major infrastructure projects.
- Experience working overseas or completing extended periods away from home.
- A current CSCS card.
- First-aid, CAT and Genny, manual-handling or other relevant site qualifications.
- Existing BPSS approval or previous experience working on government or defence projects.
Overseas working conditions
The initial Falkland Islands deployment is expected to involve long working days, potentially up to 12 hours per day and six days per week, depending on the project programme and operational requirements.
The work will be physically and technically demanding and will take place in a remote environment with changeable weather conditions.
Travel to and from the Falkland Islands and project accommodation will be arranged and provided by B Y Surveys Ltd. An additional overseas uplift or allowance will apply during the deployment. Full details will be discussed with shortlisted candidates.
