About Ad Astra
Ad Astra is a specialist alternative provision supporting young people aged 11–24 who face barriers to education and employment. We work with learners who may have autism, ADHD, developmental delay, FASD, SEMH needs, and other complex challenges. Our approach focuses on building confidence, resilience, employability, and life skills through meaningful relationships and personalised learning.

The Role
We are seeking an enthusiastic and compassionate English Teacher to join our dedicated team on a part-time basis.
This role is ideal for an educator who is passionate about making a genuine difference to the lives of young people who may have experienced difficulties in mainstream education. You will deliver engaging and accessible English lessons, helping learners develop literacy skills, gain qualifications, and build confidence in their own abilities.
The successful candidate will have the flexibility to adapt their teaching to meet a wide range of learning needs and abilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver engaging English lessons to small groups and individual learners.
- Prepare learners for Functional Skills and GCSE English qualifications where appropriate.
- Differentiate learning to meet a variety of additional needs and learning styles.
- Monitor and track learner progress.
- Contribute to EHCP outcomes and individual learning plans.
- Create a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.
- Work collaboratively with vocational tutors, support staff, families, and external agencies.
- Promote positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing through strong relationships and consistent expectations.
Essential Requirements
- Newly Qualified Teacher Status (NQT & QTS) or relevant teaching qualification.
- Experience teaching English at A level qualification
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to engage and motivate learners who may have disengaged from education.
- Strong understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities.
- Commitment to inclusive education and trauma-informed practice.
Desirable
- Experience within alternative provision, SEN, SEMH, or specialist settings.
- Knowledge of SEND, SEMH and attachment-related needs.
- Experience delivering Functional Skills and GSCE English.
- Understanding of restorative and relational approaches.
