Adventure Wellbeing School is seeking a dedicated, resilient, and compassionate Pastoral Support Assistant to join our specialist team supporting children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.This is a rewarding opportunity to make a genuine difference in the lives of pupils who require additional support to engage in education, develop positive relationships, and achieve their full potential.
About the Role
As a Pastoral Support Assistant, you will play a key role in supporting pupils' emotional wellbeing, behaviour, attendance, and personal development. Working closely with teachers, therapists, families, and external professionals, you will help create a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment where every pupil can thrive.You will build positive relationships with pupils, support them through challenges, promote emotional regulation strategies, and help remove barriers to learning.
Key Responsibilities
Supporting Pupils
- Build trusting and positive relationships with pupils.
- Provide emotional and pastoral support to help pupils regulate their behaviour and emotions.
- Support pupils during transitions, breaktimes, and throughout the school day.
- Promote positive behaviour and wellbeing in line with school policies.
- Help pupils develop social skills, resilience, confidence, and independence.
- Support attendance, engagement, and participation in learning.
- Identify and report safeguarding, welfare, or wellbeing concerns appropriately.
Behaviour and Wellbeing Support
- Deliver targeted pastoral interventions and mentoring sessions.
- Support pupils experiencing anxiety, emotional distress, or behavioural difficulties.
- Assist in implementing behaviour support plans, risk assessments, and individual support strategies.
- Use restorative approaches and de-escalation techniques to support positive outcomes.
- Contribute to creating a calm and safe learning environment.
Working with Families and Professionals
- Develop positive relationships with parents and carers.
- Support communication between home and school.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, social workers, and other professionals.
- Contribute to meetings and reviews by providing relevant feedback and observations.
School Community
- Contribute to the wider life of the school and its positive culture.
- Support educational visits, enrichment activities, and therapeutic programmes where appropriate.
- Uphold the school's values, ethos, and commitment to inclusion.
About You
We are looking for someone who:
- Has experience working with children or young people with SEN and/or SEMH needs.
- Is calm, patient, empathetic, and resilient.
- Has strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Can maintain professional boundaries while developing positive connections with pupils.
- Is confident supporting pupils who may present with challenging behaviours.
- Understands trauma-informed and therapeutic approaches, or is willing to develop these skills.
- Works effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
