Job purpose
To support the Communications team in the production of content sharing across digital channels. Helping carry out operational duties of the press office and other public and media relations functions, as detailed in the Communications team’s operational plan and the College's strategic plan.
Key responsibilities

To help coordinate production of the RCVS Podcast series, supporting the Senior Media and Publications Officer in planning and researching topics and speakers, booking recording slots and locations, supporting with editing, proofing and transcribing, and drafting copy to publicise the series across RCVS channels.

To provide live reporting of RCVS events and external conferences/congresses, carrying out interviews, taking photos for social media, drafting articles for the website and/or newsletters.

To support the media team in managing the day-to-day operations of the press office function including monitoring issues and escalating as needed, logging media enquiries, researching and creating press distribution lists, sending press releases through the online platform, and drafting media monitoring reports.

To deliver communications on key issues by drafting press releases and selling feature ideas into the media. This work is likely to include carrying out interviews, liaising with stakeholders (internal and external) and developing key messages.

To support production of RCVS publications and newsletters by drafting copy, developing feature ideas and proofing/subbing, liaising with designers and printers where appropriate.

Draft and edit high-quality and engaging copy for our communications activities, ensuring it is produced to deadline and approved before use. This may be for a variety of communications channels, including our website, press releases, newsletters and social media channels.

Assist the team in video editing for a variety of different uses (eg short clips for social media and longer form videos for the website) and subtitling footage as required.

To stay on top of best practice and new developments within the world of digital communications and to look out for additional opportunities and platforms for the RCVS to use to improve the quality of its messaging and reach out to new audiences.

Work within established brand guidelines and house language style to ensure consistent and identifiable communications, and help colleagues across the organisation to understand the importance of doing the same.

To carry out any other relevant tasks that may be reasonably requested within the team.
Other responsibilities
Will be required to occasionally travel nationally to attend events and work outside of office hours to support media relations activity.
Essential qualifications
Educated to degree level, or with a Certificate/ Diploma in a relevant subject eg public relations, journalism, digital communications etc., or relevant vocational qualifications.
Essential skills, knowledge & experience

At least one year’s relevant media/press officer or digital content experience

Excellent writing skills.

Experience of carrying out interviews – over the phone and in person.

Experience of recording/editing podcasts or videos.

Ability to absorb complex, technical information quickly and distil into accurate summaries, reports, stories and posts in plain English.

Experience of using social media channels to provide updates on events and activities.

Strong attention to detail and proof-reading ability.

Experience of using Microsoft Office, media monitoring platforms and content management systems

Good organisational skills, with ability to meet tight deadlines.

Ability to ‘find the story’ and identify key messages.

Membership of the CIPR or similar.
