Overview
The Transport and Distribution Manager is responsible for overseeing the efficient movement and distribution of goods within the supply chain. This role involves managing transportation operations, supervising logistics teams, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, extensive experience in logistics management, and a comprehensive understanding of warehouse and distribution systems. Duties
- Develop and implement transportation strategies to optimise delivery schedules and reduce costs.
- Supervise logistics personnel, including drivers, warehouse staff, and third-party logistics (3PL) providers.
- Manage transportation management systems (TMS), warehouse management systems (WMS), and enterprise resource planning (ERP) platforms such as AS400 to streamline operations.
- Oversee shipping & receiving activities, ensuring accurate documentation and timely dispatch of goods.
- Coordinate with suppliers, customers, and internal departments to ensure seamless supply chain operations.
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to delivery times, costs, and service quality; initiate continuous improvement programmes.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies across all transportation activities.
- Lead process improvement projects aimed at enhancing efficiency within logistics workflows.
- Manage inventory levels within warehouse management systems to prevent stock discrepancies or shortages.
- Oversee forklift operations within warehouses, ensuring safety standards are maintained at all times.
Skills
- Proven experience supervising logistics or transportation teams with a focus on process optimisation.
- Strong understanding of profit & loss management within logistics operations.
- Extensive knowledge of transportation management systems (TMS), warehouse management systems (WMS), ERP systems such as AS400, and supply chain software including 3PL platforms.
- Proficiency in shipping & receiving procedures, forklift operation, and warehouse experience.
- Ability to analyse data for process improvement initiatives using tools like continuous improvement methodologies.
- Familiarity with logistics regulations and safety standards across the UK transport sector.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Experience in managing large-scale distribution networks with a focus on efficiency optimisation.
