Job Description: Finance Assistant
Location: Poole, Dorset (in office)
Reports to: Finance Manager
Salary: £30,000 - £35,000
Role Overview
We are looking for a detail-oriented and organised Finance Assistant to join our growing finance team.
The Finance Assistant is responsible for supporting the day-to-day transactional finance activities of the business, ensuring financial records are maintained accurately and finance processes are completed efficiently and on time.
Working closely with the Finance Manager, you will play a key role in maintaining accurate financial records and supporting the smooth running of the finance function. The role will focus on purchase ledger management, bank reconciliations, supplier payments, financial administration, and supporting month-end activities. This is a hands-on position requiring strong attention to detail, excellent organisational skills, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Key Responsibilities
● Process purchase invoices and maintain the purchase ledger
● Ensure invoices are accurately coded and approved in line with company procedures
● Manage supplier accounts and respond to supplier queries
● Perform bank reconciliations and investigate any discrepancies
● Prepare supplier payment runs in accordance with company procedures
● Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation
● Assist with month-end activities and provide support to the Finance Manager during the month-end close process
● Prepare balance sheet reconciliations for review
● Maintain the fixed asset register and depreciation schedules
● Assist with VAT return preparation and supporting documentation
● Produce ad hoc reports and analysis as required
● Ensure compliance with internal controls, policies, and finance procedures
● Support process improvements to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of finance operations
Skills & Experience
Essential
● AAT qualified or currently studying towards AAT (or QBE)
● Previous experience in a Finance Assistant, Accounts Assistant, or similar finance role
● Good understanding of purchase ledger, bank reconciliations, and finance administration
● Strong Excel skills and confidence working with financial data
● Excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
● Strong organisational and time management skills
● Good communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships
● Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
Desirable
● Exposure to month-end activities
● Experience preparing balance sheet reconciliations
● Experience processing journals, accruals, and prepayments
● Exposure to fixed asset accounting
● Experience using accounting software
