Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Mate or Bosun to join our heritage sailing vessel for a varied programme of North Sea cruising and yard work over Summer 2026. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting the Skipper in the safe and efficient operation of the vessel, overseeing crews and trainees and ensuring the preservation of our historic maritime craft. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on one of the UK's most important sailing vessels, the 1921 Lowestoft fishing smack Excelsior.
Duties
- Manage and supervise crews and trainees
- Assist the Skipper in navigation, safety procedures, and daily operations of the vessel
- Supervise and participate in sail handling, including hoisting, reefing, and furling sails
- Conduct safety drills and ensure compliance with maritime safety regulations
- Maintain the vessel’s rigging, hull, and deck equipment
- Support training programmes for crew members and volunteers
- Contribute to the preservation of traditional sailing techniques and maritime heritage
- Other duties as assigned by Skipper
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Mate or Bosun on heritage sailing vessels
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to supervise crews effectively
- Good physical fitness with the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Demonstrable experience in sail training with under-18 trainees
- ENG1 Seafarer medical fitness certificate
- IMO STCW Basic Safety Training course
- Sea survival
- Enhanced DBS check
- UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC)
- Passion for maritime history and heritage sailing practices
Pay: £200.00-£250.00 per day
