Edinburgh Nightline is a confidential, non judgemental and non directional listening and information service, run by students for students. As a Listening Volunteer, you will provide emotional support to callers and instant messenger (IM’s) users during overnight shifts (8pm-8am), offering a safe space for students to talk openly without fear of judgement.
Volunteers listen with empathy, provide information where appropriate, and empower callers to explore their own thoughts rather than offering advice.
This is a rewarding opportunity to develop active listening, communication, teamwork and crisis support skills while making a meaningful difference to the wellbeing of students across Edinburgh.
Key responsibilities
- Provide confidential, empathetic and non judgemental support via telephone and instant messenger.
- A minimum commitment of taking a shift every 2 weeks.
- Create a safe environment where callers feel heard, respected and able to express themselves openly.
- Provide factual information and signposting when requested, without giving advice.
- Work collaboratively with another volunteer throughout each shift to ensure high quality support.
- Attend weekly meetings on Thursday evenings (if possible)
- Contribute to our training intakes, fundraising, awareness events and the continued running of the charity where possible.
- Uphold safeguarding, confidentiality and organisational policies at all times.
What we're looking for
- NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED
- A minimum contribution of one year
- Excellent listening and interpersonal skills.
- Empathy and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Respect for people from all backgrounds and experiences.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Reliable, committed and able to work effectively within a team.
- Willingness to undertake comprehensive initial training and ongoing development.
- Current student (or eligible volunteer) aged 18 or over at an Edinburgh higher or further education institution.
