Working Site Manager – Trade Background Required

HMJ Contracts is looking for an experienced tradesperson with strong organisational skills to take on a hands-on site management role.
Our projects primarily involve domestic extensions, refurbishments and new builds, with work predominantly local to Colchester, Essex.
You’ll organise labour, plan upcoming work and make sure materials are available when needed, keeping our projects moving efficiently. You must also have a proven trade background and be willing to work on the tools when required.
The role
- Organise day-to-day labour and subcontractors, making sure everyone understands their tasks and priorities.
- Plan work schedules and coordinate trades so work happens in the right order.
- Identify material requirements, arrange orders and deliveries, and check ahead to avoid delays.
- Monitor progress, workmanship and site safety, resolving everyday issues and flagging concerns early.
- Read drawings and specifications and communicate requirements clearly to the team.
- Keep management updated on progress, labour requirements and upcoming decisions.
- Carry out work within your trade when additional support is needed on site.
- Maintain tidy, organised sites and a professional relationship with clients and other contractors.
What we’re looking for
- A solid background in a construction trade, such as carpentry, bricklaying or general building.
- Experience leading a team as a working foreman, site supervisor or site manager.
- Practical experience of domestic extensions, refurbishments and new builds.
- Good knowledge of construction sequencing and coordinating different trades.
- The ability to plan ahead, take ownership and keep people and materials organised.
- A hands-on approach and pride in delivering work to a high standard.
- Clear communication and a reliable, professional attitude.
- A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel between our sites.
- SSSTS/SMSTS and first-aid qualifications would be an advantage.
