Quarry Fitter
Reporting To: Welder, Fabricator, Fitter / Assistant Quarry Manager / Quarry Manager
Based: Needingworth, Cambridgeshire
JOB PURPOSE
The Quarry Fitter is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair, and reliability of fixed and mobile plant equipment to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the quarry processing plant. The role supports production by ensuring plant availability while maintaining compliance with health, safety, environmental and statutory regulations including the Quarries Regulations 1999.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Planned Preventative Maintenance
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) in accordance with the site maintenance schedule.
- Inspect plant equipment to identify wear, faults or developing issues.
- Replace worn or defective components including conveyor rollers, bearings, belts, gearboxes, shafts, couplings, motors and drives.
- Ensure maintenance tasks are completed to a high engineering standard.
Breakdown Repairs
- Diagnose faults on mechanical plant and equipment.
- Carry out breakdown repairs safely and efficiently to minimise plant downtime.
- Work with operators and supervisors to identify the cause of plant stoppages.
- Support the production team in returning plant safely to service.
Plant Equipment
- Maintain and repair a range of quarry plant equipment including conveyors, crushers, screens, washing plant, pumps, gearboxes, drive systems, hydraulic equipment and mobile plant attachments.
Plant Reliability and Continuous Improvement
- Assist in identifying recurring plant failures and reliability issues.
- Participate in root cause investigations following equipment failures.
- Suggest improvements to plant performance and maintenance practices.
Health, Safety and Environmental Responsibilities
- Work in accordance with the Quarries Regulations 1999.
- Follow site risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work.
- Comply with PUWER, LOLER and company safety procedures.
- Carry out lock-off and isolation procedures before working on plant.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment at all times.
- Report hazards, unsafe conditions or incidents immediately.
Inspections and Reporting
- Carry out routine plant inspections and condition monitoring.
- Report defects or potential failures promptly.
- Complete maintenance documentation and records accurately.
Fabrication and Installation
- Carry out basic fabrication and welding tasks where competent.
- Assist with installation of new plant or equipment.
- Support major plant shutdowns and maintenance campaigns.
Team Working
- Work closely with plant operators, maintenance team members, production management and contractors.
- Communicate clearly regarding plant condition and repair progress.
- Participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings and team meetings.
Additional Duties
· Carry out any other duties or tasks reasonably requested by the company, supervisors or management that are within the employee’s competence, training and capability.
AUTHORISED TO
· Stop work where a serious safety risk is identified.
· Report plant defects that may compromise safe operation.
QUALIFICATIONS
· Quarry Passport / MPQC where applicable.
· Relevant mechanical engineering qualification desirable.
· Working at height or confined space awareness where required.

EXPERIENCE
· Mechanical fitting experience in heavy industry, quarrying, construction or manufacturing.
· Experience diagnosing mechanical faults.
· Experience maintaining conveyor systems and rotating equipment.
· Experience working on quarry processing plant equipment desirable.

WORKING CONDITIONS
- Outdoor and indoor working environments.

HOURS
Your normal working hours will be 06.45-17.00.
