Kip McGrath is looking for positive, reliable and enthusiastic Secondary Maths and English Tutors to join our growing team across our Kilmarnock, Troon and Irvine education centres.
We are recruiting:
- Secondary Maths teachers able to support pupils from S1 through to National 5 and Higher
- Secondary English teachers able to support pupils from S1 through to National 5 and Higher
Applicants may specialise in Maths or English. There is no requirement to teach both subjects.
Applicants may apply to work at one centre or indicate availability across more than one location.

About the role
You will teach pupils in a supportive small-group environment while providing individual instruction, feedback and encouragement throughout each session.
Depending on your subject specialism, your responsibilities may include:
- Teaching secondary pupils in Maths and/or English
- Delivering structured lessons using the Kip McGrath methodology and learning platform
- Supporting pupils with gaps in learning, confidence and core subject skills
- Helping pupils strengthen understanding of classroom topics
- Supporting secondary Maths pupils preparing for National 5, Higher or Applications of Mathematics qualifications
- Helping pupils develop exam technique and confidence with exam-style questions
- Building positive and encouraging relationships with pupils
- Maintaining accurate online records of pupil progress and goals
- Providing clear and professional feedback to parents when required
- Following safeguarding, centre and data-protection procedures
- Attending scheduled sessions reliably and punctually
- Working positively as part of the wider Kip McGrath team
Sessions take place mainly after school, during evenings and at weekends.
Tutors will normally take responsibility for one or more regular weekly teaching sessions, with the possibility of additional hours as pupil numbers and centre timetables grow.

The Ayrshire centres currently provide English tuition up to S6.
About you
To succeed in this role, you should have:
- A teaching qualification, relevant degree or current place on a teaching degree
- Strong subject knowledge in Secondary Maths or English
- A friendly, professional and encouraging manner
- The ability to build positive relationships with young people and parents
- Confidence using computers and learning software
- Good organisation and attention to detail
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team
- A genuine interest in helping young people build confidence and make progress
- The reliability to commit to the regular sessions you agree to teach
Essential requirements
- Relevant teaching qualification, degree or current teacher-training status
- Strong knowledge of the subject and levels you wish to teach
- Right to work in the United Kingdom
- PVG Scheme membership, or willingness to complete the required application
- Ability to work in person at one or more of our Ayrshire centres
- Availability for at least one regular weekly teaching session
Desirable requirements
- GTCS registration
- Experience teaching or tutoring secondary pupils
- Experience working with Curriculum for Excellence
- Experience supporting National 5 or Higher Maths
- Experience supporting National 5 or Higher Applications of Mathematics
- Experience helping pupils prepare for SQA examinations
- Experience supporting pupils who have lost confidence or developed gaps in learning
- Availability across more than one evening or weekend session

Successful applicants may work at one or more of the following centres:

- Kip McGrath Troon
- Kip McGrath Irvine
Applicants should indicate clearly which centre or centres they would be able to travel to.
There is no requirement to work across all three centres.

Hours and pay
This is a part-time role with flexible and variable hours.
Expected hours: 2–8 hours per week initially
Teaching sessions are paid at:
£36.00 per teaching hour

- Your availability
- Your subject specialism
- The levels and qualifications you are able to teach
- The centre or centres you are able to work from
- Pupil enrolment
- The developing centre timetables
- Your ability to commit to regular weekly sessions
Additional hours may become available as pupil numbers grow.
Any required training, meetings or duties outside normal teaching sessions will be discussed and paid in accordance with the terms offered.
