About the Role
Learning Champions Tutoring Limited is seeking an experienced and academically accomplished Science Tutor/Teacher to teach KS3 Science and IGCSE Biology and Chemistry.
This is a permanent daytime role supporting home-educated learners through structured, engaging and academically rigorous lessons. Classes are delivered on a hybrid basis, combining face-to-face teaching in Leicester with live online tuition.
The successful applicant must have excellent subject knowledge in both Biology and Chemistry and be able to teach:
- KS3 Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
- IGCSE Biology.
- IGCSE Chemistry.
Applicants must currently live in Leicester, be able to travel throughout the city and have reliable weekday daytime availability according to a fixed teaching schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver high-quality KS3 Science, IGCSE Biology and IGCSE Chemistry lessons.
- Deliver engaging face-to-face, online and hybrid classes.
- Follow the relevant KS3 curriculum and IGCSE examination specifications.
- Teach scientific knowledge, practical methods, mathematical skills and examination technique.
- Explain complex scientific concepts clearly and accurately.
- Prepare lesson plans, presentations, worksheets, activities and assessments.
- Use models, demonstrations, diagrams and appropriate digital resources to support understanding.
- Assess learners’ starting points and identify gaps in their knowledge.
- Monitor student progress through questioning, homework, topic tests and mock examinations.
- Mark work accurately and provide detailed, constructive feedback.
- Prepare learners for IGCSE examinations through structured revision and exam-style practice.
- Teach learners how to interpret data, evaluate scientific methods and answer extended-response questions.
- Adapt lessons for different abilities, learning needs and educational backgrounds.
- Maintain a positive, structured and inclusive learning environment.
- Provide appropriate progress updates to parents and the organisation.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, lesson content, assessments and student progress.
- Use online teaching platforms and educational technology confidently.
- Follow all safeguarding, confidentiality, health and safety, and data-protection procedures.
- Report safeguarding concerns immediately through the organisation’s established procedures.
- Attend relevant training, staff meetings and progress reviews.
Essential Requirements
Applicants must:
- Currently live in Leicester.
- Be able and willing to travel throughout Leicester for face-to-face teaching.
- Have at least two years of tutoring or teaching experience.
- Have experience teaching Science to secondary-age learners.
- Be able to teach both IGCSE Biology and IGCSE Chemistry confidently.
- Be confident teaching all three sciences at KS3 level.
- Have an excellent educational history, particularly in Biology, Chemistry and related subjects.
- Be able to provide evidence of relevant qualifications and academic results.
- Demonstrate secure and up-to-date Biology and Chemistry subject knowledge.
- Understand how to deliver lessons according to recognised IGCSE specifications.
- Be available during weekday daytime hours according to a fixed schedule.
- Be able to commit reliably to a permanent position.
- Be confident delivering in-person, online and hybrid lessons.
- Have excellent written and spoken English.
- Possess strong lesson-planning, assessment and organisational skills.
- Be able to explain challenging scientific concepts clearly and patiently.
- Understand how to assess progress and adapt teaching to individual needs.
- Be confident teaching scientific calculations, data analysis and practical-method questions.
- Be reliable, punctual and professional.
- Have the right to work in the United Kingdom.
Desirable Criteria
The following would be particularly beneficial:
- Substantial experience delivering face-to-face Science tuition.
- A degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Natural Sciences or another closely related subject.
- Qualified Teacher Status, a PGCE or another recognised teaching qualification.
- Experience teaching both Biology and Chemistry at IGCSE or GCSE level.
- Experience working with home-educated learners.
- Experience teaching small groups or hybrid classes.
- Familiarity with recognised IGCSE Biology and Chemistry examination specifications.
- Experience preparing students for formal examinations.
- Experience marking IGCSE or GCSE examination questions.
- Experience teaching practical-science methods and experimental skills.
- Experience supporting learners with SEND or additional educational needs.
- Safeguarding, Prevent, first-aid or SEND training.
- An existing Enhanced DBS certificate registered with the DBS Update Service.
A teaching qualification is desirable but may not be essential where an applicant can demonstrate excellent academic credentials, strong subject knowledge and substantial relevant teaching or tutoring experience.
Working Pattern
This is a daytime role delivered according to a fixed weekly timetable. It is not suitable for applicants who are available only during evenings or weekends.
Lessons will include:
- Face-to-face Science teaching at agreed locations in Leicester.
- Live online teaching.
- Hybrid classes involving both in-person and online learners.
- Lesson preparation, marking and progress monitoring.
The successful candidate must be able to travel reliably between agreed teaching locations within Leicester.
Recruitment Process
Successful applicants will complete a three-stage selection process:
- General interview – covering qualifications, experience, scientific knowledge, availability and suitability for the position.
- Safeguarding interview – assessing safeguarding knowledge, professional boundaries, decision-making and suitability to work with children and young people.
- Mock Science lesson – assessing Biology or Chemistry subject knowledge, lesson structure, explanations, questioning, student engagement and classroom management.
Progression through each stage will be subject to satisfactory performance at the previous stage.
