Job Title: Deputy Mobile & Fixed Plant Maintenance Manager
Department: Maintenance

Reports To: Mobile & Fixed Plant Maintenance Manager
Job Type: Full Time Basis / Hybrid (may be required to work from different company sites and/or from home as instructed or by agreement with line manager.)
Summary: The Deputy Mobile & Fixed Plant Maintenance Manager supports the Mobile & Fixed Plant Maintenance Manager in overseeing the maintenance, repair, servicing, and operational reliability of mobile and fixed plant equipment used in asphalt production, ready mixed concrete production, surfacing, quarrying, and construction operations.
The role assists in ensuring that all plant, vehicles, machinery, and equipment are maintained to the highest standards of safety, compliance, reliability, and efficiency. The Deputy Manager will provide day-to-day supervision of maintenance personnel and assume management responsibilities in the absence of the Mobile & Fixed Plant Maintenance Manager.
Key Responsibilities
1. Maintenance Operations Support
· Assist in planning, scheduling, and coordinating preventative and reactive maintenance activities across all company sites.
· Support the efficient operation, maintenance, repair, and servicing of mobile and fixed plant equipment.
· Ensure maintenance work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards.
· Monitor plant performance and identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability and availability.
· Support the development and implementation of maintenance strategies and programmes.
2. Team Supervision
· Assist in supervising maintenance technicians, mechanics, fitters, electricians, and contractors.
· Allocate daily workloads and monitor task completion.
· Support employee development through coaching, mentoring, and on-the-job training.
· Promote teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement within the maintenance department.
· Provide management cover during periods of absence of the Mobile & Fixed Plant Maintenance Manager.
3. Equipment Inspection, Maintenance and Repairs
· Conduct regular inspections of plant, equipment, and vehicles to identify maintenance requirements.
· Assist in diagnosing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and operational faults.
· Coordinate repair activities to minimise downtime and disruption to production operations.
· Ensure maintenance records are accurately completed and maintained.
4. Spare Parts and Inventory Management
· Assist with the management of spare parts inventory and stock control systems.
· Monitor stock levels and identify replenishment requirements.
· Liaise with suppliers to obtain quotations and procure parts and consumables.
· Support cost-effective procurement strategies in line with company policies and budgets.
· Ensure critical spare parts are available to minimise equipment downtime.
5. Budget and Cost Control
· Support the Mobile & Fixed Plant Maintenance Manager and Finance Department in controlling maintenance expenditure.
· Monitor maintenance-related costs and identify opportunities for efficiency improvements.
· Assist in obtaining quotations and evaluating supplier performance.
· Promote best value purchasing practices throughout the department.
6. Compliance, Health, Safety and Environmental Management
· Ensure all maintenance activities are conducted in accordance with company policies, risk assessments, safe systems of work, and relevant legislation.
· Promote a positive health, safety, and environmental culture throughout the department.
· Assist in carrying out safety inspections, audits, and investigations where required.
· Ensure maintenance personnel use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
· Support compliance with all industry standards, certifications, and regulatory requirements.
7. Continuous Improvement
· Identify opportunities to improve maintenance processes, systems, and equipment performance.
· Support the implementation of preventative and predictive maintenance techniques.
· Keep up to date with industry developments, best practices, and emerging technologies.
· Participate in relevant industry groups, training programmes, and professional development activities.
8. Reporting
· Assist in preparing maintenance reports, performance data, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
· Provide updates during management, production, and departmental meetings.
· Report significant maintenance issues, equipment failures, and corrective actions.
9. Record Keeping and Documentation
· Ensure accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, service schedules, and statutory documentation are maintained.
· Support the effective use of maintenance management software and company systems.
· Ensure all documentation is completed and filed in accordance with company procedures.
10. Emergency Response
· Respond to plant breakdowns and emergency situations as required.
· Assist in implementing emergency preparedness and response procedures.
· Support efforts to restore operations safely and efficiently following equipment failures.

Essential Criteria:
· Must have a full UK driving license as travel between sites or suppliers may be required.
· Strong commitment to health, safety, and environmental standards.
· Ability to lead teams and manage workloads effectively.
· Excellent communication and organisational skills.
Education and Preferred Qualifications:
· HNC, HND, NVQ Level 3 or higher qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Plant Maintenance, or a related discipline; OR
· Time-served apprenticeship in a relevant engineering field; OR
· Proven industry experience in mobile and fixed plant maintenance.
· IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent qualification desirable.
· Basic computer literacy and proficiency in maintenance record systems.
Experience:
· Minimum 5 years' experience in plant maintenance, engineering, quarrying, asphalt, concrete, manufacturing, construction, or related industries.
· Experience supervising maintenance personnel or leading maintenance teams.
· Experience in diagnosing and repairing mobile and fixed plant equipment.
· Knowledge of preventative maintenance programmes and maintenance planning.
· Experience working within health and safety management systems.
· Understanding of budget monitoring and cost control principles.
Skills & Abilities:

· Excellent problem-solving and fault-finding abilities.
· Good planning and organisational skills.
· Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to prioritise workload and work under pressure.
· Strong attention to detail.
· Competent IT skills, including maintenance management systems and Microsoft Office applications.
Training and CPD:
Everyone must undertake training that has been identified for their roll by the company. You will be required to familiarise yourself with colleague roles to provide complimentary cover as instructed by your line manager. You will be required to perform any reasonable request by your line manager.
Working Conditions:
The Deputy Mobile & Fixed Plant Maintenance Manager typically works in an office but will involve frequent visits on company and or customer sites and exposure to outdoors and industrial environment. Travel between sites will be required. The candidate must be prepared to work in varying weather conditions and will be required to always wear personal protective equipment when necessary. They may also be required to work nights, weekends, or irregular hours to support operational and customer requirements.

· Physical fitness to walk, climb, and navigate uneven terrain.
· Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
· Dexterity to undertake inspections and practical maintenance activities where required.
· Ability to lift and carry equipment and materials when necessary.
Salary and Benefits
· £40,000 - £46,000 per annum.
