Third (3rd) Engineer Role Overview

As a Third (3rd) Engineer here at CalMac you will be responsible to the Chief Engineer for engine room watch-keeping duties, planned maintenance and breakdown repair work.
Principal accountabilities

Observing the Chief Engineer's standing orders at all times;
- Following the Chief Engineer's instructions regarding watchkeeping duties, planned maintenance tasks to be carried out and breakdown repair work to be done;
- Working under the Chief Engineer’s supervision while carrying out these duties;
- Maintaining an efficient watch in the engine room, reporting to the Chief Engineer any operational problems which arise and solving the problems if within their capabilities;
- Recording any information on the duties, planned maintenance tasks or breakdown repairs, which has been performed, and bringing this information to the Chief Engineer's attention;
- Recording any spare parts used and notifying the Chief Engineer of spare parts used, stocks remaining, and any other relevant information required for recording or re-ordering spare parts;
- Ensuring that any work carried out is done in a safe, efficient manner, within the Engineering Departments field of work;
- Supervising Engine Room Ratings when required;
- Any other duties required by the Chief Engineer.
Qualifications, skills and experience
Essential

STCW III/I Officer of the Watch - Engine (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency
- ENG 1
- STCW Security Awareness
- Applicants should possess valid STCW 2010 basic safety training certification in Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid and Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities.
- In addition to this as Third Engineer, you will require to hold a valid Advanced Fire Fighting and Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats certificates.
Additional essential training:
CalMac requires successful applicants to hold certain certification specific to our fleet. These must be completed after accepting a job offer and prior to joining any vessel. Whilst the following training is not mandatory to apply for this role, it will be advantageous:
- STCW Designated Security Duties
- STCW Crisis Management & Human Behaviour
- STCW Passenger Safety, Cargo Safety & Hull Integrity
Desirable
-
LNG experience is not essential but would be highly desirable
- Higher Certificate of Competency
- Experience acting up in the Higher Grade would be advantageous;
- Be safety focused and familiar with CoSWP, permit to work and risk assessment processes within the company
- STCW V/3 Basic and/or Advanced Training Certificate for Ships Subject to the IGF Code (for service on MGO/LNG dual fuel vessels)
- Be able to demonstrate a strong awareness of the business environment, a robust customer interface and a proactive and positive approach to customer care
