Job Summary – Paint Technician
Purpose of the Role
- Leads the paint process within the Bodyshop, ensuring all paint repairs meet manufacturer standards, safety requirements, and customer expectations. Oversees quality, supports junior technicians, and maintains a high level of technical accuracy throughout the paint workflow.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive vehicles and job documentation from the panel shop, review previous work, and ensure all QC forms are complete and countersigned.
- Confirm vehicles are correctly stripped and prepared for paint, raising supplementary parts requests when needed.
- Identify and report any additional damage or issues discovered during the paint process.
- Prepare vehicles for paint: de‑greasing, sanding, blending, masking, priming, and oven baking to manufacturer specifications.
- Mix and match paint colours accurately using paint chips and computer‑based mixing systems.
- Apply top coats safely using correct PPE, ensuring even coverage, correct curing, and high‑quality finish.
- Conduct final inspections, verify colour match, and complete QC documentation before the vehicle moves to the next stage.
- Review and sign off the work of other technicians to maintain consistent quality standards.
- Maintain correct storage and labelling of paints, primers, adhesives, and bonding agents.
- Support team members, provide guidance to junior technicians, and participate in training and development activities.
- Maintain high housekeeping standards, prevent cross‑contamination, and follow all Health & Safety and COSHH procedures.
Measures of Success
- Customer satisfaction and feedback scores.
- Efficiency: hours worked vs. allocated time.
- Quality: minimal rectification work and strong QC inspection results.
- Accuracy of colour matching and final finish.
- Compliance with manufacturer paint processes and Bodyshop standards.
Knowledge & Skills Required
- Strong understanding of automotive systems, component locations, and repair sequences.
- In‑depth knowledge of paint products, manufacturer paint processes, mixing systems, and application techniques.
- Ability to identify colour discrepancies, resolve paint defects, and achieve high‑quality finishes.
- Familiarity with Bodyshop QC processes, safety procedures, and environmental best practice.
- Competence in using paint mixing software, tools, and equipment safely and effectively.
- Ability to communicate parts requirements, complete documentation, and support junior staff.
- Professional attitude, resilience under pressure, and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
