Job Vacancy: Flail Driver/ District Operative
Location: Hundred Foot Pumping Station, Pymmor, Ely
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

Littleport and Downham Internal Drainage Board (IDB) is responsible for managing water levels and land drainage within its district around Ely, providing water management to support agriculture, the environment, and local communities. The Board is part of the Ely Group of Internal Drainage Boards, which provides shared technical, operational, and administrative support across several drainage districts.
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Flail Driver / District Operative to join our small, dedicated workforce. This is a varied and hands-on role that will involve working across the Board’s district and, when required, undertaking works for other Boards within the Ely Group.
The job will be based at our depot near Pymoor, Ely, Cambs
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate tractor/flail for the maintenance of vegetation on our watercourses.
- Carry out general maintenance duties across the Board’s district, including weed cutting, debris clearance, and structure upkeep.
- Assist with the operation, inspection, and routine maintenance of pumping stations and other water control assets.
- Undertake works for other Internal Drainage Boards and private works as required.
- Ensure all tasks are completed safely and efficiently, in accordance with the Board’s health and safety procedures.
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Proven experience in operating tractors and other machinery.
- Full UK driving licence (preferably including towing entitlement).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small, practical team.
- A good understanding of health and safety when working outdoors and near water.
- Willingness to work in all weather conditions and occasionally outside normal hours (e.g. during flood events).
- In a emergency, must be able to attend the depot within 30 minutes
Desirable:
- Experience working within an Internal Drainage Board, Environment Agency, or Local Authority drainage or maintenance team.
- Relevant operation certificates.
- Basic mechanical or electrical knowledge for pump and asset maintenance.
