Job Title: Nursery Deputy Manager
Reports to: Nursery ManagerJob Purpose:
To support the Nursery Manager in the day-to-day running of the nursery, ensuring a safe, stimulating, and nurturing environment for all children. The Deputy Manager is responsible for leading the team in the absence of the Manager and supporting the delivery of high-quality early years education and care in line with the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage), safeguarding requirements, and best practice.
Key Responsibilities:Leadership & Management
- Support the Nursery Manager in the daily operational management of the nursery.
- Provide effective leadership to the team, acting as a role model and ensuring high standards of practice.
- Take charge of the nursery in the absence of the Manager.
- Contribute to the recruitment, training, supervision, and appraisal of staff.
- Foster a positive, collaborative working environment where staff feel supported and valued.
Childcare & Curriculum
- Ensure the delivery of a high-quality EYFS curriculum that meets the developmental needs of each child.
- Observe, assess, and plan activities tailored to individual children’s needs and interests.
- Promote inclusive practices and ensure that all children are supported to reach their full potential.
Safeguarding & Welfare
- Ensure a safe, secure, and stimulating environment where children's health and well-being are paramount.
- Act as the Designated Safeguarding Lead (or support the DSL), ensuring all safeguarding concerns are managed according to policy.
- Maintain accurate records including accident/incident forms, medication logs, and safeguarding reports.
Parent & Community Engagement
- Build strong, professional relationships with parents, carers, and outside agencies.
- Communicate effectively with families regarding their child's development and progress.
- Support the planning and delivery of parent meetings, events, and workshops.
Compliance & Administration
- Ensure that the nursery meets all regulatory and legislative requirements including Ofsted standards.
- Support with administrative tasks such as staffing rotas, risk assessments, and stock management.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to data protection policies.
Person Specification:
Essential:
- Level 3 qualification (or above) in Early Years/Childcare.
- Experience in a nursery or early years setting.
- Strong understanding of the EYFS and statutory framework.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
- First Aid and Food Hygiene certificates (or willingness to obtain).
Desirable:
- Experience as a Deputy Manager or Room Leader.
- Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) training.
- Knowledge of SEND and inclusive practices.
