FLOATING MAINTENANCE OPERATIVE – Safe Harbor Care Homes
Competitive Pay | £400 Starting Bonus* | Free Parking | Discounted Meals | Multi-Site Role | Training + Development
Safe Harbor is a family-run provider of Residential and Residential Dementia Care Homes across Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire. We’re proud of the supportive culture in our homes and the standards we continue to build—quality, dignity, safety, and person-centred care, every day.
Our values (how we work)
- Together: Residents and staff at the heart of everything we do. Strong relationships with residents, families and each other
- Safe: Safety as the foundation—robust care planning and continuous review
- Improving: Always learning, listening and raising standards
- Compassion: Individualised, gentle, respectful care
We’re looking for a skilled, multi-trade Floating Maintenance Operative to lead physical improvement works across all three of our care homes—Agnes & Arthur, The Place Up Hanley, and Florence House. This is not a general repairs role: you will be delivering real building projects that upgrade and transform our homes for the residents who live in them.
The role (what you’ll be doing)
- En suite installation from shell to final fix – building the room structure, all first-fix pipework and wiring, tiling, plumbing in shower, toilet and sink, fitting doors and architrave, completing all second-fix/final-fix finishes
- Full bathroom, shower room and WC renovation and upgrade – strip-out, re-waterproofing, new sanitary ware, tiling, fixtures and final finishes to a high standard
- External and groundworks including guttering and fascia upgrades, car park repairs and resurfacing, drainage and general external improvement works
- General improvement works including fitting kitchen units, refurbishing sluice rooms, and decorating to a consistent, professional finish
- Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPMs) – completing and recording scheduled checks including fire alarm tests, emergency lighting, call points, Legionella water temperature checks and PAT testing
- Site maintenance cover – stepping in to perform day-to-day maintenance duties at whichever home requires it when the resident maintenance person is on leave or absent
- Travel between all three sites as required to meet the programme of works
- Working safely at all times – following Health & Safety, COSHH and fire procedures; ensuring risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) are in place before works begin
- What we’re looking for
- Demonstrable multi-trade experience – you must be confident across plumbing, carpentry/joinery, tiling, first-fix and second-fix building works
- Proven experience of building en suites or wet rooms from scratch (including structural shell works, pipework, electrics and finishing)
- Ability to carry out full bathroom strip-outs and refits to a high standard
- Groundworks and external works capability including guttering, fascia and car park/drainage works
- Strong understanding of Health & Safety, COSHH and safe working practices
- Organised and self-motivated – able to plan and prioritise across multiple sites and projects
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle – travel between all three Staffordshire sites is a core requirement of this role
- Right to work in the UK — applicants must not require sponsorship now or in the future
Relevant trade qualifications or City & Guilds (desirable but not essential – demonstrable experience will be considered)
What you’ll get at Safe Harbor
£400 “Golden Hello” starting bonus*
Free parking
Discounted meals
Refer-a-friend bonus*
Mileage/travel expenses between sites (to be agreed)
Training and development support including Health & Safety, COSHH and trade-specific training where needed
Recognition and appreciation initiatives (including staff awards and team treats)
The opportunity to see real, tangible improvements you have built – this role leaves a lasting mark on the homes
Working hours
Full-time (hours and days to be agreed) – site travel is built into the role and mileage will be recognised
If you’re a skilled tradesperson who takes pride in delivering quality work and wants to make a genuine, visible difference to the homes of our residents, we’d love to hear from you.
