Personal Support Worker / Carer for a Young Person with Complex Needs
Job Overview
We are looking for a kind, reliable and enthusiastic Personal Support Worker to join our small team supporting our 16 year old son, a friendly and engaging young man with complex physical disabilities.
This is a rewarding one-to-one role where no two days are the same. You will play an important part in helping our son live a full, active and enjoyable life, both at home and out in the community. Whether supporting him with personal care, helping him access activities, assisting with communication or simply sharing in the things he enjoys, you will have the opportunity to make a genuine difference every day.
This is not just a care role. We are looking for someone who wants to build a positive relationship with our son, encourage his independence wherever possible and support him to achieve the best quality of life.
Full training will be provided, so previous experience with complex needs is welcome but not essential. We value the right attitude, compassion and willingness to learn above everything else.
About our son
Our son is a young person with cerebral palsy who is a full-time wheelchair user. He also has autism and cerebral visual impairment.
He enjoys spending time out and about, watching films and TV, listening to music, visiting new places and taking part in activities with the right support. He has a great sense of humour and responds well to patient, calm and positive people.
Main Responsibilities
- Provide safe, high-quality one-to-one support tailored to Gabriel’s individual needs.
- Assist with all aspects of personal care while maintaining dignity and respect.
- Support safe moving and handling using specialist equipment. Full training will be provided.
- Assist with eating, drinking and medication where required.
- Support him to communicate using his preferred methods and communication equipment.
- Accompany him to appointments, school, activities, holidays and community outings.
- Encourage independence, confidence and participation in everyday life.
- Help with therapy programmes and exercises following guidance from healthcare professionals.
- Monitor his wellbeing and report any concerns to his family.
- Keep accurate daily records where required.
- Work closely with his family and other professionals to provide consistent, person-centred support.
- Maintain a clean, safe and organised environment.
- Follow all safeguarding, confidentiality and health and safety procedures.

Experience
Previous experience in care, healthcare, education, support work or working with children or young people with additional needs is desirable but not essential.
We provide comprehensive training, including:
- Moving and handling.
- Personal care.
- Medication awareness.
- Communication support.
- Autism awareness.
- Cerebral palsy awareness.
- Emergency procedures.
- Safeguarding.
We will also undertake enhanced DBS if you do not have one already.
Shifts vary but are set on Monday to Friday 4pm to 9pm during school time, every other Saturday 12-6pm and odd Sunday mornings. During school holidays hours will cover from 9am to 9pm so shifts will vary to what suits, short of longer. We are looking for multiple people to join this team to help cover hours. Will accept applications who want 1 shift a week to multiple.
