About the qualification
What qualification and training will I receive?
As part of the scheme, you'll work towards a Level 3 Apprenticeship in ICT, Software, Web and Telecoms while gaining valuable hands-on experience in a range of DDaT roles across Welsh Government.
You'll be supported throughout your apprenticeship by experienced colleagues and a dedicated training provider, who will help you develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to succeed.
The apprenticeship typically lasts around 18 months, with:
80% of your time spent learning through practical experience in the workplace
20% of your time dedicated to structured learning, including classroom sessions, online learning, self-study and assignments
Alongside your apprenticeship qualification, you'll receive additional learning and development opportunities through both the DDaT profession and Welsh Government's wider training programme.
To successfully complete the apprenticeship you will need to have:
Passed your probation period
Achieved your Certificate in ICT, Software, Web and Telecoms
Demonstrated the skills and experience required by the DDaT profession apprenticeship framework
By the end of the programme, you'll have gained a recognised qualification, valuable workplace experience and a strong foundation for a career in Digital, Data and Technology.
Am I eligible?
To apply for the DDaT Apprentice Scheme, you will need to:
Meet the Civil Service Nationality requirements
Be at least 16 years of age by 1st September 2026. There is no upper age limit
Not be in full-time education when you start in March 2027
You do not need any previous experience or specific qualifications to apply. We're looking for people who are motivated to learn and have an interest in digital, data and technology.
If you already hold a Level 3 qualification or above in ICT, Software, Web and Telecoms (or a closely related subject), you may not be eligible for this apprenticeship.
If you are unsure whether your qualifications affect your eligibility, please contact
[email protected] for advice.
As part of the apprenticeship, you will also need to complete the Wales Essential Skills Toolkit (WEST) assessment. This online assessment helps evaluate your literacy, numeracy and digital skills and identifies whether any additional support or development may be beneficial when undertaking your apprenticeship.

Assessment Process
Stage 1 – Application
After submitting your application, you can expect to receive an email containing a link to complete an eligibility check with our Apprenticeship Training Provider. It is essential that you complete this check, as we will be unable to progress your application without it.
As part of the eligibility checks, the training provider may ask to see copies of your educational certificates, either during the initial eligibility check or as part of the pre-employment checks process.
During this stage, we will also be assessing the evidence provided in your application form (sift).
In the event of a large number of applications, we may increase the minimum score required to pass the sift.
If you successfully pass both the eligibility checks and the sift, then you will be invited to attend an interview.
All applicants will be notified of their outcome.
Stage 2 – Interview
Interviews are expected to take place during November and will be conducted online via Microsoft Teams. All candidates will be notified of the outcome of their interview.
Stage 3 – Offer
Candidates who successfully complete the assessment process will receive a conditional offer of an apprenticeship with the Welsh Government. Once you accept the conditional offer, we will begin the pre-employment checks process, which typically takes between 6 and 8 weeks to complete.
During this stage you will also need to undertake the WEST test mentioned above.
Reserve List
A reserve list may be held for this opportunity. Any candidate who is successful in being offered a reserve status, will remain on the reserve list for 12 months. If suitable roles become available during this time, we may contact you.
Induction and Training
Once all your pre-employment checks are complete and your start date has been confirmed, you'll take part in an induction and training programme with the rest of your apprenticeship cohort.
We want to make your learning experience as engaging and supportive as possible. Some training sessions may take place at our Cathays Park office in Cardiff, giving you the opportunity to learn alongside other apprentices, build your network and get to know colleagues from across the organisation.
We'll do our best to keep travel to a minimum and make any visits worthwhile by providing additional learning and development opportunities. Wherever possible, training will be delivered virtually.
Over the course of your apprenticeship, we expect that time spent training in Cardiff will be no more than four weeks in total. These sessions are likely to be arranged as one-week "boot camps" spread throughout the programme. Any travel costs associated with attending apprenticeship training can be claimed and reimbursed.
Location
During the interview stage, you will be asked to indicate their preferred location(s). We will make every effort to offer a role in your preferred location; however, this cannot be guaranteed.
The DDaT Apprentices are based at the following office locations:
Cardiff
Merthyr
Aberystwyth
Llandudno
We will consider requests to work in specific locations based on personal circumstances like caring responsibilities or an impairment or health condition.
Office attendance
We support Smart Working: a flexible, inclusive and safe approach that balances organisational needs with individual wellbeing.
Most colleagues are expected to spend at least 40% of their working time in the office (around two days a week, pro rata for part-time colleagues) to support collaboration, connection and delivery. The remainder of the week may be spent working from home or other locations, although some roles may require more office-based attendance to meet business needs.
Smart Working is supported through regular conversations with managers, Team Charters and agreed working arrangements that help teams work effectively across office, remote and blended environments.
