Role Overview
Based at BCA Automotive’s Marchwood parking location, the Mobile HGV Mechanic will provide breakdown assistance and defect repairs across the Southampton and surrounding area. This role is essential in ensuring the safety and roadworthiness of vehicles, supporting maximum fleet utilisation.
Reporting to the South East & South Coast Fleet Engineer, the post holder’s key responsibilities include:
- Inspecting vehicles to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults, carrying out repairs as required. Working closely with Fleet Engineers and Crouch Recovery to manage daily priorities and ensure commercially sound decisions that balance cost and downtime.
- Maximising fleet utilisation by resolving defects as quickly and efficiently as possible.
- Organising replacement parts and arranging specialist support when necessary.
- Managing and controlling an impress stock, replenishing items via home delivery or designated drop‑off points.
- Carrying out annual LOLER inspections.
- Working outdoors and offsite as required to meet business needs.
- Complying with all company Health & Safety standards and procedures.
- Providing support to Vehicle Maintenance Units (VMUs) when required.
- Maintaining a professional company image by ensuring the service van is kept clean, organised, and presentable at all times.
Person Specification
The ideal candidate will have:
- Level 3 City & Guilds or NVQ qualification, or be a Time‑Served Technician.
- Strong diagnostic experience with excellent problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
- Good working knowledge of the DVSA Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness.
- Roadside breakdown experience supported by the relevant qualifications.
- The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
- The ability to perform well under pressure and use their own initiative.
- Excellent communication skills.
- A full UK driving licence. An HGV licence is desirable but not essential.
Additional Information
- Company van, general equipment, and a small roller cabinet are provided. Own tools are required.
- Overtime is paid for out‑of‑hours callouts.
- PPE and a Lone Worker Device are supplied.
