This is a yard role with a Class 1 driver's wage attached, because some nights the job is not standing in the yard, it is being in the cab.
We are looking for a Class 1 Yard Debrief to join our Bury team, running the yard from 2:00pm to 10:00pm as our drivers come back in and work with the operations team to get vehicles ready to be reloaded for the next day. You will debrief every driver on return, check the state of each vehicle and pull the detail out of the day: what went right, what went wrong, and what needs fixing before that vehicle goes out again.
The rest of the job is the trade-off for the Class 1 wage. Because the business can need cover across Bury, Oswestry and Preston at very short notice, you will keep your Class 1 licence, CPC and digital tachograph card live and ready, so you can step into a cab and run a trunking shift, usually starting around 8:00pm, whenever it is needed so flexibility here is a must.
The role at a glance
Location: Bury (Head Office), with flexibility to work at Oswestry or Preston when covering a trunking shift
Reports to: Transport Operations Manager
Contract: permanent, full time, contracted to 40 hours per week
Hours: 2:00pm to 10:30pm, 5 days Monday to Friday, with flexibility to extend or shift these hours at short notice to cover trunking, which usually commences around 8:00pm
Pay: £35,500 a year (£28,000 basic plus a £7,500 supplement for your Class 1 licence and flexibility) (£17.07 an hour)
What you will actually be doing
Yard Debrief
You own the yard at Bury as drivers return from their routes. That means debriefing every driver on the vehicle, the load and returns including trays, and any issues from the round, and checking the state of each wagon and trailer coming back in, including damage, cleanliness and defects.
On the yard
- Manage the yard at Bury as drivers return, covering shift hours of 2:00pm to 10:00pm.
- Pull the detail out of each job: what went wrong, what went well, and what needs feeding back to drivers, planning or operations.
- Document and report accidents, near misses, temperature excursions or safety incidents arising from the day's routes.
- Document and report all returns and process them in line with business ways of working
- Maintain a full and accurate audit trail of debrief records.
- Be forklift trained to help load and unload vehicles. FLT training can be provided.
Team and communication
- Provide constructive, day to day feedback to drivers to encourage continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with the Transport Operations Manager, Transport Compliance Manager and Planners to close out issues raised at debrief.
- Support Dunsters' One Team culture through a visible, approachable presence in the yard at Bury.
Trunking cover and compliance
Debriefing the yard is most of the job, but not all of it. You are also our backup plan for Class 1 trunking, so we hold you to the same standard as any driver on the road.
Trunking cover
- Maintain a full Class 1 (C+E) licence, Driver CPC and digital tachograph card, ready to cover a trunking shift between Bury, Oswestry and Preston at short notice.
- Cover trunking, which usually commences at 8:00pm, when the business needs it, on top of or in place of the yard debrief shift.
- Work flexibly around short-notice cover requests, recognising this is the trade-off for the Class 1 supplement.
- Experience with double decker trailers is an essential.
Compliance and standards
- Maintain compliance with drivers' hours, Working Time Directive and vehicle safety standards at every debrief.
- Escalate recurring issues, such as damage, missed checks or hours irregularities, to the Transport Operations Manager and Transport Compliance Manager as appropriate.
- Support Dunsters' daily vehicle-check culture at Bury by holding drivers to account at the point of return.
- Ensure hours worked covering trunking are recorded and reconciled against contracted hours, and paid back as time off in lieu.
Your working week
- Shift pattern: 5 days, Monday to Friday, 2:00pm to 10:30pm
- Contracted hours: 40 hours a week
- Trunking cover: short notice, usually commencing around 8:00pm, on top of or in place of your debrief shift
- Flexibility: some days and weeks will ask more of you than others, particularly when trunking cover is needed.
What we are looking for
You do not need to tick every box, but you must meet our non-negotiable criteria:
Non-negotiable
- Full category C+E (Class 1) driving licence, valid Driver CPC and digital tachograph card.
- Willingness to work variable hours, including short-notice cover for trunking shifts between Bury, Oswestry and Preston.
- Willingness to undertake a pre-employment Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check where required.
What will make you good at the role
- Previous debriefing, yard supervision or driver-facing transport experience.
- Confident using vehicle-tracking, telematics and debrief systems.
- Experience with double decker trailers.
- Confident having direct, sometimes difficult, conversations with drivers.
- Forklift experience, or a willingness to be trained. FLT training can be provided.
- Working knowledge of drivers' hours and Working Time Directive rules.
- Genuinely comfortable wearing two hats: hands-on and detail-focused running the yard debrief, and just as happy dropping the clipboard to jump in a cab when we need cover
