We’re offering an exciting opportunity for an experienced Design Manager to join our BIP/Refresh business area in Watkin Jones. This role is ideal for a proactive and commercially minded professional who is passionate about delivering high-quality, innovative design solutions.
As Design Manager, you will lead the design process throughout the entire development lifecycle, ensuring projects are delivered efficiently, effectively, and to the highest standards. You will be responsible for reviewing proposals from both internal and external consultants, identifying solutions that are practical, cost-effective, and forward-thinking.
Collaboration is central to this role. You will work closely with internal teams, consultants, and external stakeholders, attending design meetings across the UK. As such, flexibility to travel, including occasional overnight stays, is essential.
In addition, you will play a key role in supporting procurement activities by assessing alternative design solutions put forward by subcontractors, reviewing drawings for compliance with building regulations, and researching new products, materials, and construction methods. Your contribution will help drive innovation, improve efficiency, and support the successful delivery of our developments.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have an NVQ Level 5 qualification (or equivalent) and solid knowledge of Building Regulations. A strong understanding of JCT (Joint Contracts Tribunal) contracts is also essential. You should be confident in making well-reasoned decisions and have the ability to constructively challenge design concepts and present your point of view clearly.
You’ll need to be proficient in MS Word and Excel, with an intermediate level of experience in AutoCAD and Adobe Acrobat. Experience with high-rise developments and knowledge of the residential-for-rent market will be highly advantageous.
