Job Summary
Care assistants to attend to the personal needs and comforts of all people using the service in line with the policies and procedures as prescribed by the person in charge.
Provide Personal Care
Provide personal care to people using the service in line with the agreed care plans:
- Work under the supervision of a Senior Care Assistant.
- Attend to and meet personal hygiene needs, e.g. bathing, hair care, visits to the toilet, including the use and emptying of commode, dealing with incontinence and catheter bags/ stoma bags.
- Monitor skin integrity and support with repositioning or application of creams as per health care professional advice for prescription.
- Maintain choice, privacy, dignity and independence of people using the service.
- Establish a relationship with all people using the service, listen and talk with them to encourage mental and physical stimulation.
- Encourage all people using the service to achieve maximum independence (by assisting residents to meet their own needs whenever possible) e.g. excursions, hobbies and recreations.
- Give practical assistance, if required, with the use of talking books, cassette recorders and other specialist aids and equipment.
- Liaise with other staff, report and document relevant issues.
- Help to make sure that all dietary needs are met.
- Help people using the service with mobility problems and other physical disabilities, whether this is with the use of aid appliances or not.
- Assist people using the service who need help with dressing, undressing and eating.
- Care for anyone who is temporarily sick and need minor dressing and bed nursing. Administering first aid when necessary.
- Monitors service users conditions by taking temperature, pulse, respiration and weight, and contribute to record keeping.
- Care for anyone using the service who are terminally ill or in the last stages of illness.
- Assist with all aspects of moving and handling following training, this may include using approved and assessed moving and handling equipment.
- Attend to nurse call system promptly.
- Answer emergency alarms.
Help in the running of the care home
Ensure a comfortable environment is maintained for all people using the service:
- Read and write reports/ records to reflect people’s needs and activities of daily living.
- Ensure all records are kept up to date and in the correct place to comply with GDPR.
- Take an active part in staff and other meetings.
- Make and change beds, tidy rooms, cleaning and empty commodes.
- Inspect, launder and mend clothes. Sluice, wash, dry and pack up soiled linen as required.
Receive, check, sort and distribute linen from laundry.
- Set table trays, serve meals and drinks and prepare light snacks. Wash up, tidy, clean and clear the dining room.
- Answer the door and the telephone and treat all visitors cordially. Helping relatives and visitors and directing enquiries to Senior Member of staff on duty.
Health and Safety
Ensure health and safety requirements are met within the service:
- Carry out effective care procedures in line with health and safety requirements
- Report faults and hazards
- Visually check equipment before use
- Adhere to the Health and Safety at Work Act
- Ensure that infection control procedures are carried out effectively
- Ensure stocks of material are maintained and stored appropriately
