Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled General Maintenance Operative to join our team at Lostock Installations Ltd. The successful candidate will be responsible for the repair, installation and upkeep of fixtures, fittings and facilities within premium and luxury retail environments across UK airports. This role requires a proactive, hands‑on approach to joinery and general maintenance, with an emphasis on safety, quality of finish and minimal disruption to live trading areas. The ideal applicant will possess strong all‑round handyman and joinery skills, excellent organisational and communication abilities, and the confidence to work as the sole company representative on site. Based at Manchester Airport with travel to sites nationwide, this position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals with a passion for maintenance and problem‑solving to contribute to a well‑established, family‑run business working with some of the UK's best‑known retail brands.
Responsibilities
- Carry out joinery and fitting works including the repair and refit of display drawers, runners and cabinet doors, gondola shelf securing and levelling, glass shelf replacement, and edge‑banding and laminate repairs.
- Install shelving, racking, wall brackets, skirting, cladding, column protectors and both flat‑pack and custom furniture to a high standard.
- Complete door, lock and hardware works including hinge and door adjustment, fire door inspection and repair, mechanical and digi‑lock installation, and key cutting.
- Undertake specialist tasks such as floor tile and vinyl repairs, painting and finishing, fire‑stopping, and basic plumbing including tap replacement and minor leak repairs.
- Work flexibly outside normal trading hours (evenings, early mornings and weekends) and travel to airport sites across the UK, including stays away from home.
- Maintain accurate records of all works, including detailed job notes, before‑and‑after photographs and materials used, updated via our job management system on the day of each visit.
- Communicate professionally with store managers, brand contacts and internal management, flagging issues proactively and providing clear updates.
- Ensure all work complies with health and safety regulations, including safe working practices in live retail environments.
Experience
- Proven experience in general maintenance, handyman or joinery work within commercial, retail or similar environments.
- Strong practical joinery skills with a genuine pride in the quality of the finished work.
- Confident with the administrative side of the role (clear written communication, quality photography and basic Excel/data entry).
- CSCS card, or a willingness to obtain one (support provided).
- Eligibility to obtain an airside security pass - a minimum of five years' checkable employment or education history and a satisfactory DBS check.
- First Aid at Work, Manual Handling, IPAF or PASMA certifications are advantageous (training can be funded for the right candidate).
- Prior experience in airport or secure retail environments is beneficial but not essential.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently or as part of a team under minimal supervision, while maintaining high standards of safety, presentation and quality.
