Job Summary
We are seeking a reliable, organised and hands-on Shop & Café Supervisor to support the day-to-day running of Tastes of Tomatin.
This is a primarily shop-based supervisory role, with regular hands-on support provided to the café during busy periods and when operationally required.
Reporting to the Operations Manager, the successful candidate will help supervise shop and Front of House staff, maintain high standards of customer service and presentation, manage shop stock and ordering, and act as the senior member of the shop/FOH team when senior management is not on site.
The role would suit someone with strong retail or hospitality experience who is ready to take on greater responsibility. Previous supervisory experience is desirable but not essential, and training and development will be provided.
Duties
- Support the smooth day-to-day running of the shop and café Front of House operation
- Supervise shop and FOH staff during shifts and lead by example
- Act as the senior person on duty when the Operations Manager and other senior staff are not on site
- Allocate duties, organise staff breaks and adjust staff deployment according to customer demand
- Provide input into staffing requirements and rotas, while overall responsibility for scheduling remains with the Operations Manager
- Take responsibility for ordering all shop stock, with support where required
- Monitor stock levels and ensure appropriate availability of products
- Liaise with suppliers and other departments to coordinate orders
- Receive and check deliveries and deal with routine supplier queries or discrepancies
- Carry out stock rotation, date checking and waste control
- Participate in stocktakes and investigate stock discrepancies where required
- Maintain high standards of merchandising and shop presentation
- Ensure products are clearly and accurately priced
- Provide input and recommendations on pricing and product selection
- Operate tills, handle cash and card payments, complete till reconciliation and prepare till reports
- Complete opening and closing procedures, including ensuring the shop is ready for customers each morning and completing end-of-day close-down procedures
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, hygiene and presentation across the shop and café FOH areas
- Check that daily and weekly cleaning tasks are completed and appropriately signed off
- Support compliance with health and safety procedures, identifying hazards and escalating concerns where required
- Oversee age-verification and alcohol-sale procedures and support staff with restricted sales
- Handle routine customer complaints and service issues professionally, escalating more serious matters where necessary
- Address minor staff performance or conduct issues during shifts and escalate recurring or significant matters to the Operations Manager
- Provide input into recruitment and staff development where appropriate
- Support and help develop less experienced team members as the role progresses
- Provide additional cover for holidays and sickness where reasonably required
- Regularly support the café team during busy periods, including:
- Customer service
- Taking orders
- Till operation
- Coffee and hot drink service
- Serving food prepared by the kitchen
- Clearing tables
- Washing crockery and glassware
- Restocking FOH items
- General café cleaning and presentation duties
The role does not include responsibility for food preparation or cooking.
Skills and Experience
- Previous retail experience is strongly preferred
- Previous supervisory or team-lead experience is desirable but not essential
- Hospitality, café or barista experience is desirable, although training can be provided
- Strong customer-service skills
- Reliable, organised and able to manage competing priorities
- Confident supervising and supporting colleagues
- Comfortable taking responsibility and making day-to-day operational decisions
- Able to remain calm and effective in a busy environment
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Able to lead by example and work hands-on alongside the team
- Basic IT competence, including email, spreadsheets and EPOS/till systems
- Good attention to detail, particularly regarding stock, cash handling and shop presentation
Training and Development
Tastes of Tomatin is committed to developing its staff and providing opportunities to build skills and take on additional responsibility.
Food Hygiene Level 2 training will be provided and must be completed within the first six months of employment.
A Personal Licence is desirable but not essential. Appropriate training and certification can be arranged for the successful candidate where required.
Due to our location and limited public transport, applicants must have a reliable means of travelling to and from Tomatin.
Regular weekend working is required, although we aim to provide full weekends off within the rota where possible.
Pay: £28,500.00 per year
