About Blackwater Academy
Blackwater Academy Birmingham is an independent Alternative Provision supporting students aged 11–16 who may have experienced disrupted education or barriers to succeeding within mainstream settings.
We provide a supportive, structured environment with small class sizes, high expectations and a strong focus on building positive relationships.
Our students may have a range of additional needs, including SEMH, SEND, ADHD, ASD, literacy difficulties and significant gaps in prior learning. Many students join us at different points throughout the academic year, so our curriculum is designed to respond flexibly to individual starting points.
The Role
We are looking for an enthusiastic, resilient and adaptable Teacher of English to join our Birmingham team.
You will deliver engaging and accessible English lessons across KS3 and KS4, supporting students towards qualifications including GCSE English Language, GCSE English Literature and Functional Skills English.
This role would suit a teacher who enjoys working with smaller groups, building strong relationships with young people and adapting teaching to meet a wide range of academic and additional needs.
Key Responsibilities

- Deliver GCSE English Language and Literature and support Functional Skills pathways where appropriate.
- Identify and address gaps in students' prior learning.
- Adapt teaching for students with SEND, SEMH and a range of different starting points.
- Use assessment effectively to establish baselines and monitor individual progress.
- Establish clear classroom routines and maintain high expectations for behaviour and learning.
- Build positive and professional relationships with students who may previously have disengaged from education.
- Work collaboratively with teaching assistants, behaviour mentors, pastoral staff and the wider academy team.
- Contribute to the development of English, literacy and reading across the academy.
- Maintain accurate assessment and progress information.
- Contribute positively to the wider development of Blackwater Academy Birmingham.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who:
- Has strong English subject knowledge and the confidence to teach KS3 and KS4.
- Has experience of teaching GCSE English Language and/or Literature.
- Can adapt learning for students with different starting points and additional needs.
- Can build strong relationships while maintaining clear boundaries and high expectations.
- Has effective classroom and behaviour-management skills.
- Is calm, patient, resilient and consistent.
- Understands that progress within Alternative Provision can be both academic and personal.
- Is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
- Is willing to work collaboratively as part of a small and supportive team.
QTS or QTLS is desirable but not essential.
Applications are also welcomed from experienced unqualified teachers, tutors or English specialists who can demonstrate strong subject knowledge and successful experience of working with young people.
