AW Baxter Ltd is looking for a hard-working, hands-on Senior Yard & Warehouse Operative with strong practical experience operating heavy machinery. This role is suited to someone who leads from the front, uses common sense, and is not afraid to get stuck in alongside the team.
You will be responsible for the safe, efficient day-to-day running of the yard and warehouse, operating machinery yourself while supervising others and ensuring work is carried out properly, safely, and on time.
Key Responsibilities
Hands-On Yard & Warehouse Duties
- Actively work on the yard and in the warehouse daily
- Load and unload vehicles using forklifts and overhead cranes
- Safely operate heavy machinery and lifting equipment
- Carry out picking, packing, and dispatch of materials
- Receive, check, and correctly store incoming deliveries
- Ensure materials are handled, stacked, and stored safely
- Maintain a clean, organised, and efficient yard and warehouse
Machinery & Equipment Operation
- Confident operation of overhead cranes
- Operation of B1, B2, and B3 forklifts (preferred)
- Carry out basic daily checks on machinery and equipment
- Report faults, damage, or maintenance requirements promptly
- Ensure all lifting operations are carried out safely and correctly
Supervisory & Management Responsibilities
- Lead by example and work alongside the yard and warehouse team
- Allocate daily tasks and manage workloads practically
- Keep work moving efficiently and safely throughout the day
- Use common sense to solve day-to-day operational issues
- Ensure staff follow safe systems of work at all times
- Step in immediately to correct unsafe or inefficient practices
- Act as first point of contact for yard and warehouse issues
Health & Safety
- Take responsibility for health & safety on the yard and warehouse floor
- Ensure lifting operations and machinery use meet safety standards
- Carry out regular checks and enforce PPE requirements
- Maintain a strong safety culture through practical leadership
Skills & Experience Required
- Strong, proven experience in a yard or warehouse environment
- Hands-on experience operating heavy machinery (essential)
- Confident use of overhead cranes (essential or highly desirable)
- Forklift licences B1, B2, B3 preferred
- Strong practical knowledge and common-sense approach to work
- Physically fit and capable of manual handling
- Hard-working, reliable, and self-motivated
- Able to lead by example and take responsibility
