Key Account & Business Development Manager – Protein Products

Matthews Meats are an established supplier of protein products to business customers across the UK and Europe. We produce and supply over 100 tons per week into the foodservice and manufacturing sectors, where we are now are looking for a commercially focused Key Account & Business Development Manager to protect and grow these relationships while developing profitable new business.
This is a dual role, focusing on existing-account management and also new-business development. You will build long-term customer relationships, develop individual account plans and identify opportunities to increase volume, product range, order frequency and gross profit. You will also build a qualified pipeline of prospective customers and convert suitable opportunities into profitable repeat accounts.
This role would suit someone who enjoys relationship-led selling, understands the importance of margin and is comfortable taking responsibility for commercial results.
Key responsibilities:
- Manage and develop existing customer accounts
- Build trusted relationships with owners, buyers and other decision-makers
- Create account plans and agreed growth objectives for key customers
- Identify cross-selling, upselling and product-ranging opportunities
- Monitor order frequency, purchasing patterns and account profitability
- Conduct regular customer calls, meetings, visits and account reviews
- Recognise declining or at-risk accounts early and take corrective action
- Reactivate suitable dormant customers
- Negotiate pricing and commercial terms while protecting gross profit
- Maintain high levels of customer service and retention
Business development:
- Identify and approach prospective customers within agreed target markets
- Build and maintain a clearly reported new-business pipeline
- Qualify opportunities based on volume, margin, payment terms and long-term potential
- Arrange product samples, prepare quotations and manage follow-ups
- Negotiate and close profitable new accounts
- Develop new opportunities within existing and emerging sales channels
- Represent the company professionally at customer meetings and relevant industry events
Commercial planning and coordination:
- Deliver agreed revenue, volume, gross-profit and retention targets
- Prepare accurate monthly forecasts based on customer demand and pipeline activity
- Work closely with purchasing and operations to support stock availability
- Communicate upcoming customer requirements, seasonal demand and potential risks
- Help minimise stock shortages, excess stock and avoidable write-offs
- Monitor customer payments and support collection within agreed credit terms
- Keep account information, activities and next actions up to date in the CRM
- Provide regular reports on performance, opportunities, risks and competitor activity
What we’re looking for:
- Proven experience in B2B account management, business development or field sales
- Evidence of retaining and growing a portfolio of repeat customers
- Strong commercial awareness, including revenue, margin and gross-profit management
- Confident negotiation and relationship-building skills
- Ability to analyse customer performance and identify growth opportunities
- Strong forecasting, planning and organisational skills
- Comfortable prospecting for and closing new business
- Good numerical ability and proficiency with Excel and CRM systems
- A full UK driving licence
Desirable
- Experience within protein, food, foodservice, wholesale, ingredients, commodities or FMCG
- Experience selling a portfolio of multiple products
