Organ Lead CLU - Liver
Job Summary
The liver Lead CLU will provide clinical leadership for the liver transplant community, championing and promoting the values of organ utilisation and delivering the Liver Offer Review Scheme.
You will be expected to establish effective working relationships with key stakeholders across the Organ Utilisation community, being an advocate and voice of challenge. You will seek to understand and influence the relationships between organ donation and organ acceptance, liaising with colleagues in Organ Donation, as well as National Organ Retrieval Service NORS and transplant collaboratives, identifying opportunities for collaboration. You will be a key member of the Organ Utilisation Development Team (OUDT)
Role requirements include Identifying and prioritising projects, with the ability to optimise utilisation potential by minimising missed transplant opportunities. Identifying barriers to increased organ utilisation, both within liver transplantation and more widely, and the benefits of projects already undertaken will inform further interventions.
You will work with Local Liver CLUs to increase Organ Utilisation, and you will be required to provide support and guidance to them as appropriate.

Main duties of the job
-
Support and develop regular community meetings with local CLUs
- Attendance at NHSBT meetings for Organ Lead CLUs

Development of action plans for your organ specialty

Submission of final report to NHSBT Associate Medical Director for Organ Utilisation (evaluation of steps taken and priorities for longer term change)

Deliver Offer Review Scheme

Additional activities
- Triage and assure correspondence in respect of role and utilisation issues as required.
- Leadership and support for ensuring that Local CLUs have appropriate plans and policies in place, developed in line with national policy and guidelines.
- Report organ-specific utilisation performance information.

Monthly contact with areas of responsibility.

Review of any policies.

Clinical Expertise / Advice

Source of knowledge regarding organ utilisation and provide advice as required.

Escalate via NHSBT Clinical Governance structures any critical incident or ‘near-miss’ relating to organ utilisation practice for your specific organ type.

Consider any Missed Utilisation Opportunities

Investigate and prioritise opportunities to improve utilisation of your specialist organ type.

Challenge colleagues and barriers as required to eliminate missed opportunities.
- Promotion e.g., national promotion activities, international transplant community events

Act as a spokesperson/ advocate for utilisation as required.
- Academic e.g., research / publications, presentations at regional / national / international meetings

About You
Experience and Knowledge
- A medical qualification and experience of working at consultant level in transplant medicine or surgery.

Knowledge and experience of deceased organ transplantation.
- Understanding of current national policy and guidelines relevant to organ utilisation.

Evidence of experience in working positively and effectively with NHS staff at all levels and the ability to lead and work within a multi-professional team.

Ability to inspire and energise colleagues.

Personal commitment to ensuring National Strategy recommendations and national guidelines are implemented and functioning at the national level and preparing the service for increases in transplantation anticipated as a result of Opt Out legislation and other initiatives, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Personal commitment to minimising missed opportunities in transplantation in one’s own hospital

Personal commitment to identifying areas of opportunity for delivering improvements and successfully implementing change
