The firm provides the traditional accountancy services but with a modern, forward-looking approach. Known locally for professionalism, efficiency, and strong personal service, Hawkins Priday builds long-term relationships with businesses of all sizes. Clients benefit from flexible, comprehensive support and access to a friendly team with extensive expertise.
Role Description
We are looking for a bookkeeper to oversee and take ownership of our bookkeeping function. You would run client bookkeeping and VAT, set the standard for how it is done, and be the person the firm relies on to keep it accurate and on time. There is a real volume of processing involved, invoices and transactions included, and our tools are designed to make that efficient. This is your area to own and lead, with the full support of the wider team and management behind you.
Day to day, you will:
- Process invoices and transactions and take client books through to trial balance in Xero and QuickBooks
- Prepare, check and submit VAT returns across a range of schemes
- Reconcile bank and control accounts and resolve queries at source
- Act as a first point of contact for client bookkeeping and VAT questions
- Keep records clean and review ready so accounts and tax work run smoothly
- Set and maintain the standard for how bookkeeping is run across the firm
If accounts preparation interests you, there is scope to develop into that work as well.
About you
We are more interested in what you can do than in your formal qualifications. You are likely a strong fit if you:
- Can run bookkeeping and VAT independently and accurately
- Have a genuine grasp of double entry, not only the software
- Are confident with cloud accounting software and comfortable adopting new tools
- Take ownership of your work and follow things through without being prompted
- Communicate clearly and professionally with clients and colleagues
- Practice experience across a range of clients
- AAT qualified, part qualified, or qualified by experience
- Familiarity with VAT schemes such as flat rate, margin and partial exemption
What we offer
- Salary of £24,000 to £34,000, based on experience
- Full time, with flexibility in line with our flexible working policy (40% work from home, and core hours of 10am - 3pm)
- Enhance holiday entitlement - 23 days plus BH, increasing to 25 days after 2 years
- A supportive, collaborative team in a central Hereford office
Pay: £24,000.00-£34,000.00 per year
Benefits:
- Company pension
- Flexitime
- Free parking
- Referral programme
- Work from home
Work Location: In person
