We have a great opportunity available to join Novus, our prison education provider at HMP Swinfen Hall, working as a Functional Skills English and Maths Cover Teacheron anhourly-paid, ad-hoc basis.

Site Information
HMP Swinfen Hall is a category C prison for young adult and adult men located near the village of Swinfen and is situated 2 miles south of Lichfield in Staffordshire. The key aim of the prison is to provide education, vocational training, and comprehensive support services to prepare inmates for a successful reintegration into society.
Role Responsibilities
This key role supports the consistent delivery of high-quality learning across the curriculum, helping to ensure continuity for learners and maintaining a positive, purposeful classroom environment. The successful candidate will be passionate about supporting learners to achieve their qualifications and improve their confidence. They will foster an environment which encourages future progression into further education and engagement in the wider curriculum.
Key Duties:
- Deliver engaging Entry Level to Level 2 English and Maths sessions to learners across a range of abilities, adapting resources and teaching approaches to meet individual needs.
- Provide cover for planned and short-notice teaching requirements, ensuring learners continue to receive consistent, supportive and high-quality education.
- Support learners to develop practical literacy and numeracy skills that can be applied to everyday life, employment and further learning opportunities.
- Create a safe, inclusive and motivating learning environment that promotes confidence, participation and positive behaviour.
- Assess learner progress, provide constructive feedback and maintain accurate records in line with quality and curriculum requirements.
- Work collaboratively with education, prison and support teams to contribute to learners’ personal development, progression and successful resettlement.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience
To be successful in this role, you will need to:
- Hold a teaching qualification and where applicable, relevant subject specialist qualification - with a commitment to obtain the outstanding qualification within an agreed timeframe.
- Hold a minimum Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy (GCSE Grade C/4 or equivalent).
- Have experience delivering Functional Skills English and Maths to learners with varying needs and abilities.
- Create engaging, inclusive learning environments that motivate learners from diverse backgrounds to engage in the subject matter.
- Assess learner needs, create and deliver individual learning plans and help learners prepare for assessments.
- Monitor progress, provide constructive feedback and maintain accurate learner records.
- Promote safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion in all aspects of delivery.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders to support positive learner outcomes.
- Contribute to quality assurance, continuous improvement and achievement of quality targets.
- Communicate effectively, with strong organisation, IT and administrative skills.
- Ideally, hold a Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) or higher.
- Ideally, have experience with adult learners, apprentices or learners with additional support needs.
- Ideally, understand awarding body requirements and assessment procedures.
