Position: Waste Management Driver
Location: Stanley Industrial Estate, Skelmersdale, Lancashire, WN8 8EE
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Duration: 1+ Months
Working Hours: 36 hours per week
Pay Rate: £17.08 per hour
Job Responsibilities:
- Operate refuse collection vehicles safely and in accordance with road traffic regulations and council procedures
- Lead and supervise a small waste collection crew during daily rounds
- Ensure efficient collection of household, commercial, and recyclable waste from designated routes
- Support loading and unloading of waste materials as part of the collection team
- Carry out pre-use vehicle checks and report any defects or maintenance issues promptly
- Ensure all work is completed safely, following health and safety guidelines at all times
- Provide direction and support to team members to ensure routes are completed on schedule
- Maintain high standards of customer service when working in public areas
- Assist with depot duties including vehicle cleaning and basic maintenance support
- Complete basic paperwork and reporting related to collections and incidents
Requirements:
Essential Experience:
- Experience in waste management, refuse collection, or similar manual driving/operational role
- Experience driving large vehicles (e.g. HGV or refuse vehicles) in a work environment
- Experience working as part of a team in physically demanding outdoor conditions
- Driving licence
Essential Skills & Knowledge:
- Full valid driving licence appropriate for vehicle type (HGV entitlement if required)
- Good understanding of health and safety in manual handling and vehicle operations
- Ability to lead and coordinate a small team during operational work
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills for reporting and documentation
- Knowledge of waste collection procedures is desirable
Essential Behaviours:
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work early starts and in all weather conditions
- Strong team leadership and communication skills
- Safety-conscious with a responsible attitude to vehicle operation and manual handling
- Physically fit and able to undertake heavy manual work
Desirable:
- CPC qualification (if applicable)
- Experience working in local authority waste services
- Knowledge of recycling and environmental waste practices
