About the role
Identity Furniture designs and manufactures commercial furniture for workplace, education, healthcare and hospitality clients. Our installation team is the last pair of hands on every project and the first person the client meets on site — how the job looks and feels on handover comes down to the install crew.
This is the senior role on that crew. You will run installations on site from arrival to sign-off: setting out the work, directing the installers and any additional labour with you, holding the standard, and dealing with the client and main contractor face to face. It remains a hands-on role — you will be installing alongside the team, not watching them — but you carry responsibility for the programme, the safety of the crew and the quality of what we hand over.
Key responsibilities
Planning and preparation
- Review drawings, specifications and programme with Management before each install, and raise queries or buildability concerns early.
- Carry out pre-install site surveys where required — access routes, lift dimensions, floor levels, power and fixing constraints — and report anything that will affect the install.
- Agree access, parking, loading and permit arrangements with the client or main contractor ahead of arrival.
- Plan labour, vehicles, tools and install sequence for the job, and brief the crew on the method before work starts.
- Check picks, drawings and loads against the order and resolve shortages with the factory before leaving.
Leading the installation on site
- Set out the installation and allocate work across the crew, keeping the job to programme and to sequence.
- Supervise installers, apprentices and agency or subcontract labour, ensuring they work safely and to our standard.
- Make on-site decisions where conditions differ from the drawing, and escalate variations, delays and additional works to Management promptly with clear information.
- Act as the day-to-day point of contact for the client, site manager and other trades, managing expectations professionally.
- Install, assemble, level and align products hands-on, including the more complex or high-value items: acoustic pods, acoustic screens and panels, soft seating, tables and loose furniture.
Quality, handover and reporting
- Own the snag list — inspect the completed area, identify defects before the client does, and arrange rectification.
- Walk the finished installation with the client, demonstrate product operation and obtain sign-off on completion paperwork.
- Keep a clear photographic and written record of the install, variations, damage and site conditions.
- Complete and check the crew’s job sheets and timesheets and submit them accurately and on time.
- Feed recurring product, packaging or fitting issues back to production and design so they get fixed at source.
Health, safety and compliance
- Take responsibility for the crew’s safety on site: ensure inductions, RAMS and permits are in place, understood and followed.
- Deliver toolbox talks and point-of-work risk assessments, and stop work where conditions are unsafe.
- Check that access equipment, lifting aids, tools and PPE are appropriate, inspected and correctly used.
- Report incidents, near misses and damage immediately and accurately.
Developing the team
- Train and mentor less experienced installers and set the standard for conduct on client premises.
- Give honest feedback to Management on crew performance, capability gaps and training needs.
- Support recruitment by assessing practical skills at interview stage where asked.
Experience and skills
Essential
- 5+ years’ experience installing commercial, office or contract furniture, including at least 2 years leading installs or running a crew on site.
- Confident reading and setting out from furniture drawings, floor plans and dimensioned layouts.
- Proven ability to manage the client relationship on site — professional, calm under pressure, and credible with main contractors and site managers.
- Working knowledge of RAMS, site inductions, permits to work and construction site rules.
- Highly skilled with hand and power tools, and sound judgement on what can and cannot be modified on site.
- Full UK driving licence — [category B minimum; category C1 desirable] — with a clean or near-clean record.
- Physically fit and comfortable with regular manual handling, working at height on steps or podiums, and being on your feet all day.
- Reliable, punctual and flexible about early starts, out-of-hours access and overnight stays away from home.
- Clear written reporting for snag lists, survey notes and variation records.
- It is your responsibility to ensure that if an issue arises on site you try to provide a solution instead of leaving a job unfinished and communicate this with the office if needed.
- If you are not out on Install work you will be required to work in the factory.
- Right to work in the UK.
Desirable
- SSSTS or SMSTS supervisory safety qualification.
- Experience of phased, multi-floor rollouts and live occupied environments — healthcare, education, laboratories, data-sensitive offices.
- Experience working directly under a principal contractor on CDM-notifiable projects.
- Ability to produce measured survey notes or mark-up drawings for the office.
- Experience of furniture reconfiguration, churn and service or warranty callouts.
Certifications and compliance
We will support and fund the following where you do not already hold them:
- CSCS card — [supervisory/gold card level for this role].
- SSSTS (Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme) or SMSTS.
- First aid at work.
- Manual handling training.
- PASMA (mobile towers) and/or IPAF (powered access).
- Asbestos awareness (UKATA or equivalent) for work in existing buildings.
- Satisfactory [DBS / Disclosure Scotland] check and, where clients require it, additional security clearance or vetting.
What we offer
- £15.75 per hour depending on experience —based on 40 hours per week. Reviewed annually.
- Overtime paid at time and a half (£23.62 per hour), and a £25 per night allowance plus paid accommodation and meals when working away.
- 20 days’ holiday plus bank holidays. Additional day for Birthday.
- Workplace pension, Royal London.
- Company vehicle for work use, tools, uniform and PPE provided.
- Funded supervisory training and certification, and a route into contracts or installations management for those who want it.
- Staff discount on furniture.
- Cycle to work scheme.
How to apply
