We are seeking specialist tutors to mentor a highly motivated 16-year-old student who has just completed his GCSEs. He is a self-taught technology enthusiast who already runs his own Linux home servers (Debian/Fedora), has set up DNS-level ad blocking (Pi-hole) and a Jellyfin media server, writes software in C (including with the Raylib library), and has basic Python skills.
The goal of these lessons is to channel his existing passion into professionally valuable, career-relevant skills. We are looking for structured, project-based teaching — not passive lectures — building towards recognised certifications and a portfolio of real work.
Lessons will run once per week per subject (60–90 minutes), online with practical assignments set between sessions.
About the role
Teach a motivated teenage student practical, hands-on cybersecurity from the fundamentals upwards, with a long-term view towards a career in security (penetration testing, SOC analysis, or security engineering).
What we're looking for
- Currently working (or recently working) in cybersecurity — e.g. penetration tester, SOC analyst, security engineer
- Hands-on credentials preferred: OSCP, CEH, Security+, CySA+, or demonstrable professional experience
- Comfortable teaching through practical platforms such as TryHackMe or Hack The Box
- Able to explain concepts clearly to a bright beginner and set weekly challenges
- Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one), as this involves one-to-one tuition of a minor
Scope of teaching (indicative)
- Networking and Linux fundamentals from a security perspective
- Core security concepts: threat models, common vulnerabilities, defensive basics
- Guided practical labs (TryHackMe learning paths or equivalent)
- Scripting for security tasks in Python and Bash
- Preparation for CompTIA Security+ as a first milestone certification (target: 12–18 months)
Non-negotiable requirement All practical work must take place in legal, isolated lab environments (TryHackMe, Hack The Box, personal virtual machines). No activity of any kind against real third-party systems. We expect the tutor to actively teach and model legal and ethical boundaries.
What we'd like from applicants
- A short summary of your professional background and any certifications
- A rough 3-month lesson plan showing how you would start with this student
- Your hourly rate and availability
- Willingness to do a paid trial session
