Job Purpose
Dawson Housing Limited is seeking two Community Patrol Officers to provide a visible overnight presence across its housing properties.
The role will involve patrolling designated properties, responding to reports of antisocial behaviour, identifying safety and security concerns, supporting residents and escalating serious incidents to the appropriate emergency services or Dawson Housing teams.
The successful candidates will help ensure that Dawson Housing residents, properties and communal areas remain safe and secure throughout the night.
Key Responsibilities
Night Patrols
- Patrol Dawson Housing properties throughout the night in accordance with an agreed patrol schedule.
- Maintain a visible and reassuring presence across properties and surrounding communal areas.
- Check entrances, exits, communal areas, car parks, external spaces and other designated areas.
- Identify unauthorised access, suspicious activity, property damage and other security concerns.
- Ensure communal areas are safe, secure and free from immediate hazards.
- Record the time, location and outcome of all patrols.
Antisocial Behaviour and Incident Response
- Respond promptly to reports of antisocial behaviour, noise nuisance, disturbances and other resident concerns.
- Assess situations calmly and take appropriate action within the boundaries of the role.
- Engage professionally with residents, visitors and members of the public.
- Attempt to de-escalate situations where it is safe and appropriate to do so.
- Contact West Midlands Police, emergency services or other relevant agencies where necessary.
- Preserve evidence and provide accurate information regarding incidents.
- Report serious tenancy breaches, safeguarding concerns or criminal activity to the appropriate Dawson Housing team.
- Avoid placing yourself, residents or members of the public at unnecessary risk.
Resident Safety and Welfare
- Provide reassurance to residents who report safety or security concerns.
- Identify and report safeguarding, welfare or vulnerability concerns.
- Follow Dawson Housing safeguarding and escalation procedures.
- Provide appropriate assistance during emergencies until further support arrives.
- Treat all residents with dignity, fairness and respect.
Property and Health and Safety Checks
- Identify and report emergency repairs, health and safety hazards, fire safety concerns and security issues.
- Check that fire exits, access routes and communal areas remain unobstructed.
- Report damage, vandalism, fly-tipping, broken lighting and other environmental concerns.
- Escalate urgent repairs through the appropriate out-of-hours process.
- Follow up outstanding matters where required.
Partnership Working
- Develop effective working relationships with West Midlands Police, local authorities, emergency services and other relevant agencies.
- Share appropriate information in accordance with Dawson Housing policies and data protection requirements.
- Represent Dawson Housing professionally during all interactions.
- Attend operational briefings, partnership meetings and incident reviews where required.
Reporting and Administration
- Complete patrol logs, incident reports, ASB reports and other required documentation accurately and promptly.
- Maintain a clear record of actions taken, advice provided and matters escalated.
- Use Dawson Housing systems to record patrols, incidents and follow-up actions.
- Prepare written statements or provide information to support investigations where required.
- Ensure that confidential information is handled securely and in accordance with UK GDPR and Dawson Housing policies.
- Provide a clear handover to the relevant daytime team following each shift.
General Duties
- Attend team meetings, briefings, supervision sessions and training.
- Follow Dawson Housing policies, procedures and codes of conduct.
- Wear any required uniform and identification while on duty.
- Operate company vehicles safely and responsibly.
- Work flexibly to meet the operational needs of the organisation.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties appropriate to the role.
Person Specification
Essential
- Experience working in security, housing, community safety, enforcement, policing, neighbourhood management or a similar public-facing role.
- Ability to remain calm and make appropriate decisions during challenging or confrontational situations.
- Experience of dealing with incidents, complaints or antisocial behaviour.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to communicate confidently with residents, members of the public and partner agencies.
- Ability to work independently throughout the night.
- Good observational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to complete clear and accurate written reports.
- Basic IT skills, including Microsoft Office, email and electronic reporting systems.
- Understanding of professional boundaries and confidentiality.
- Willingness and ability to work night shifts, weekends and bank holidays as required.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Current SIA licence in Door Supervision, Security Guarding or an equivalent relevant category.
Desirable
- Previous experience working within social housing or supported housing.
- Experience responding to antisocial behaviour or community safety incidents.
- Experience working alongside the police, local authorities or emergency services.
- Knowledge of safeguarding adults and children.
- Understanding of tenancy-related issues and social housing responsibilities.
- Knowledge of health and safety, fire safety and lone-working requirements.
- First aid or conflict-management training.
