Tunnels & Engineering Director Opportunity with the Civil Works Alliance (CWA), Supporting Sizewell C
As part of the CWA (Civil Works Alliance), you will support the building of Sizewell C. Sizewell C will be a 3.2-gigawatt power station generating low-carbon electricity for around 6 million homes and will play a key role in our energy future, supplying reliable, clean electricity for at least 60 years. This role will be within the Marine and Tunnels Section.
What will you do?
The Project Director will be to lead all technical / engineering topics related to the Marine & tunnelling works
- Accountable for the strategic development, validation, and delivery of construction sequences and methodologies for all underground and tunnelling and marine activities, including:
- Site establishment and temporary works infrastructure
- Excavation support systems and ground stabilization strategies
- Tunnelling operations and underground construction execution
- TBM procurement, assembly, launch, and decommissioning strategies
- Comprehensive construction method statements and technical specifications for tunnelling & underground works
- Temporary Works Design and engineering for underground structures
- Marine works methodology
- Develops and owns integrated technical solutions aligned with Client objectives.
- Leads and mentors a multidisciplinary team of senior engineers and project managers, fostering technical excellence and continuous improvement in methodologies and delivery approaches.
- Owns the technical integrity and quality assurance of all underground and tunnelling solutions, ensuring compliance with project specifications, contractual requirements, and Client value expectations.
- Chairs design reviews and provides strategic technical inputs to the Client's Design teams, ensuring buildability, constructability, and alignment with agreed execution methods.
- Ensures design compatibility and identifies interface risks early; coordinates resolution across all interconnected work packages and disciplines.
- Champions stakeholder alignment by delivering timely, comprehensive technical information to other project disciplines and workstreams.
- Directs Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) partnerships with specialist subcontractors and suppliers; develops scopes, manages procurement activities, and oversees delivery of collaborative technical solutions.
- Chairs design and constructability reviews with the Marine technical leadership to ensure integrated solutions across the marine-tunnel interface and maintains engineering consistency across all disciplines.
- Advises Planning and Cost Estimation teams on programme and financial impacts; provides technical inputs to support scheduling and budgetary forecasting.
What are we looking for?
Qualifications & Experience
- Leadership of either a significant and complex major construction programme or a large infrastructure-related contracting business; experience of heavy civils major projects would be highly desirable
Knowledge of the operational detail of project execution
Demonstrable track-record for delivering great project or business outcomes through collaborative work
practices
Track record of effectively leading multi-disciplinary teams with diverse backgrounds
Exposure to projects that are subject to a high level of regulatory scrutiny, security, and safety
Knowledge & Skills
Ability to provide inspirational leadership, with clarity of direction and purpose
Ability to build effective and trusting relationships with stakeholders and customers
Demonstrable drive, self-awareness and resilience coupled with high degree of integrity
Ability to manage complexity, including how to navigate multi-faceted business operations

Highly developed communication, listening, negotiation and presentation skills to generate confidence and assurance to the client, project team and other stakeholders.
